I believe it's quite different now. In the 1890's you didn't have Irish coming here with the goal to make the U.S. an Irish Republic. I believe most Muslims would like the U.S. to become an Islamic Republic some day and the illegals demanding "Reconquista." Things are different in the 21st century

Huh, how conviently we forget, "Irish need not apply" or "pig Irish" from the Boston Brahmans and others in the 19th century.

The more things change, the more things stay the same, especially with the resurgence of 19th century "know nothing" political thinking and cynicism by some on the right.

Actually, the Irish who came over from the 1840s to the 1870s (by the 1890s, more were coming from Eastern Europe than from Ireland) were VERY violent, dominated the prisons in the NE, with the women often resorting to prostitution. They were notorious for their hostility to "native" Americans, and often assaulted those who passed through the Five Points or East Boston.

Of course, once the Irish gained political power, they proceeded to discriminate against every other ethnic group, whether Anglo, black, Italian, Jewish, etc.

WHat the Mexicans need is an Archbishop "Dagger John" Hughes (google that name to see what I'm talking about). On our end, we simply need to crack down on employers who hire illegals and build a wall.

There was discrimination against the Irish (my ancestors were among them) and other nationalities.

The basic difference is that the Irish and others immigrating to the U.S. wanted to become Americans ... a part of the melting pot. They were willing to accept the U.S. on its terms, not try to make the U.S. "New Ireland."

Today, the melting pot has been replaced by the worship diversity.
