Not in D.C. Anymore
For some students at the New School, in Manhattan, their institution and conservative politicians go together as well as Swiss cheese and peanut butter.
Bob Kerrey, the institutions president and a former Democratic governor and senator from Nebraska, announced this spring that U.S. Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican and past and possibly future presidential candidate, would be the commencement speaker at the New School. Kerrey said the senators acceptance is a big honor for our graduates and their families.
But hundreds of students, staff and faculty members at the institution of about 9,000 students have signed paper and online petitions that seek to revoke the invitation.
McCain will (also) be speaking at Liberty University, whose founder and chancellor, Rev. Jerry Falwell, has openly expressed his opposition to homosexuality.
Up until a few months ago, I was happy he was coming, said Anthony Szczurek, a New School freshman. I think the thing that bothers me the most is him speaking at Jerry Falwells school. Szczurek said that he thinks its not appropriate to have a speaker that is hostile to the gay community speak on a day of celebration at an institution with a vibrant gay community.
Kerrey said that he considers McCain one of the most important political leaders in the world today, and that he accepted our invitation before Libertys.
The student demonstrations have been very respectful, the president said, noting that he fully supports their right to organize.
Kerrey added that John McCain isnt anti-homosexual.
He has not supported federal legislation restricting gay marriage, he said. We have very good policies that make our campus very welcoming.... I dont think his presence subtracts from that.

when was the last time you heard or read "left wing extremist" or "left-wing radical" or "left winger" in the MSM?
Now they can call him a "controversial maverick" :-)
So why did McCain join in the censorship party with CFR? He, of all politicians ought to be comfortable being censored.
Two logical fallacies at the base of this article:
1. John McCain is a conservative
2. Ultra-liberal actually would listen to a conservative viewpoint in any case.
Other than that I give the author high marks for grammar and spelling.
Seems to be the fad with the media these days.
Could it be the media's trying to make its favorite Republican palatable to the GOP base, in time for '08?
I never saw him called conservative in 2000.
Sen. McCain likes to be thought of as a maverick, I think. Sometimes I think he does what he does to either get attention; or to get invited onto "Hardball" without regard for actual policy or his fundamental beliefs (whatever they might be)
LOL, 'bat; good one
Gel: He is conservative (sort of) on defense/WOT issues. Otherwise he is strictly an attention-hungry "moderate" Republican
he is finally reaping what he sowed, I hope he's booed at every commencement address;shameless pandering to the MSM,liberals,Dubya's haters first rate backstabber could not have happened to a nicer person.
The "war" as we're presently fighting it?
Or, the war as we should be fighting it"
This week, President Bush defined the WOT as World War III.
I hope that means we'll start fighting it as such...
Semper Fi
"What in the world would anyone want to hear from McCain?"
I am pretty sure John Boy wants to hear himself.
He is also speaking at Columbia.
He'd take an engagement at Southwest Missouri State or Fort Lewis College if he thought TV cameras would be there
