The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post all lead with the forced resignation of CIA Director Porter Goss after only 18 months on the job. President Bush is expected to appoint a replacement next week. The NYT and Post seem pretty certain that the replacement will be Air Force General Michael V. Hayden, who is currently a deputy for John Negroponte, the director of national intelligence.
A former GOP congressman, Goss was CIA director for only a few months before Bush effectively demoted him by making Negroponte his boss. Negroponte, not Goss, now gives the president his daily intelligence briefing, and Goss' resistance to Negroponte's turf encroachment is cited as the ostensible reason for his departure. (The Post notes that Goss and Negroponte were once frat brothers at Yale.)
But the real reason, as revealed in dozens of criticisms and backhanded compliments in both the Post and NYT, is that Goss was a terrible manager. "Goss could not overcome a reputation as a partisan politician who worked congressional hours and appeared disinterested in his overseas intelligence counterparts," writes the Post. Around a dozen senior agency officials either resigned in protest or asked for reassignment under Goss' leadership. The LAT adds that Goss left the running of the agency largely to his former congressional aides. According to the Post, Goss' staff used to ask about the party affiliations of analysts who made negative assessments of the Iraq situation. An anonymous "friend" of Goss tells the NYT, "I think he was in over his head." The ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee has this to say: "Porter made some significant improvements at the C.I.A., but I think even he would say they still have some way to go." Ouch.

Sounds like "Dilbert:CIA".
The CIA Director knew the Agency would fall under Negtroponte from the gitgo. Why is it so hard for reporters to gather facts from real sources instead of repeating the buzz.

Um, you know, after the past few elections and all we hear from the DNC lately - how could you blame them? I dont. EVERYTHING you hear from a democrat concerning Iraq is nothing but negative gloom and doom so they can undermine or force Bush out of office - especially in the CIA.
Of interest is why the absence of prior reporting for justify this termination. Many accounts now mention problems that the agency was having. Obviously problems never achieved the critical mass now every reporter seems to have discovered. Weird.
As you say, this is completely understandable. Especially since clinton took political operatives like Mary McCarthy and "bureaucratized" them by stuffing them into key posts before he left office.
Doncha just love the media? They know squat about what President Bush hired Peter Goss to do. They know squat what Peter Goss and president talked about.
If Peter Goss is the man I believe him to be he will never blab it in a book.
JMHO
Oh man,....now that is GOOD!!!
**********************************
Point of clarity that will be coming out in the days and weeks to come, Mary (Loose Lips) McCarthy wasn't just "a" leaker - she was in fact the Queen Bee leaker from which all the little worker bees delivered their 'honey'.
So do you get it now? Goss killed the Queen - mission accompished. By the way, while Priest laments on an "agency in turmoil", I actually hear that far more in the agency are happy that Goss came to town and killed off the hive.
"I liked his leadership. .....The tired lifers that couldn't keep their puss off a phone receiver to the media.....we're a intelligence agency, not the Democratic National Committee...."
And why was Porter Goss's resignation so surprising to everyone...because Porter Goss had the LEAKERS SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. LOL Eveyone is trying to spin this by saying this was sudden....NO IT WASN'T ... it was sudden to them cause NO ONE was around to leak it!!! If I was to take a guess...this resignation had been planned for sometime...;o)
We'll see. But you have to admit, if you're right, the timing was terrible.
Clinton didn't ask about CIA political affiliations when he took over - he just fired everyone and staffed to whole place with card carrying go-along-to-get-along lefties.
The Queen Leaker Bee is dead!
The Queen Leaker Bee is dead!
Goss was asking the right question to root out the traitors.
Are you a democrat?

Not from the ***NY Daily News***, I don't (believe it).
Then add the fact that Cooper is married to Hillary's best friend, Mandy and it was Cooper's FIRST WEEK AS CHIEF WHITEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT, and he made the calls to Rove and Libby...gee...How many da** dots do you need.
I think the folks who are speculating that Goss did his job and it was time to move on are correct. He got the key leaker; that is what he went in to do -- clean out the scum. He succeeded and will now retire, with mission accomplished under his belt.
