Ruling on a 15-year-old ACLU case, a federal judge today ordered the city of San Diego to remove a mountain-top cross within 90 days or face a fine of $5,000 a day.

U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson said, "It is now time, and perhaps long overdue, for this court to enforce its initial permanent injunction forbidding the presence of the Mount Soledad cross on city property," the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Judges our the lawmakers of the 21st century, they know better what is good for us than what we do,

they are appointed to protect us from the harm we would do to our selves if it were not for them!

Different cross different area.

Mt. Helix has a cross on top in the La Mesa area, east of the City of San Diego

Mt. Soledad with the Cross (the cross in dispute)
is in the La Jolla area of San Diego over looking the ocean.

The homes in that area go for mega millions.

Can't they just declare this illegal cross an undocumented cross and ignore the law?

Payable to whom

I would assume the US Treasury. But if Congress would pass a law that would reimburse the city for any fines paid, it would effectively negate the ruling.

The activists have basically done away with that pesky old 10th Amendment.

The mayor of San Diego can ignore it and pay no fines.

Yawn..

A dime a dozen. One judge implements it, the next judge takes it away. Been doing this since the 60s.

And who's going to enforce the collection?

City should immediately sell the 10' x 10' plot of land to a private trust.

Judges seem a bit literal-minded.

They should be called "Interpreters" instead.

doesn't "san" mean "Saint"? How about changing the name of the city like they did St.Petersburg to Leningrad in the good old USSR?

Yeppers....my old hometown did it...a local company bought the land and told the ACLU to bugger off...

The ACLU came all the way up to a small town in central WI and tried to force the good folks there to take down their statue of Christ (next to the edge of town on Main street)...that read "Christ Guide Us On Our Way"

Put up back in the 60s...

What The Good Lord gives the ACLU tries to take away....

The 'hicks' of Marshfield, WI 54449

Beat the ACLU at their own game....

The land the cross is on would go into the tens of millions of dollars

It wouldn't surprise me if he ordered the installation of a crescent.

The cross you are talking about is on Mount Helix, another is in downtown La Mesa and now belongs to The American Legion, it is also by the way the very first permanent VietNam memorial in the United States, which was transferred by the city

"I am a Judge! I have spoken! You will obey!"

Perhaps this judge should be fitted for tar and feather finery and be given a free ride out of town on a thin wooden fence part.
