The governor signed a law Wednesday granting recognition to Abenaki Indians, a move long sought by tribal members who celebrated with drumming, song and prayer on the Statehouse steps.
Supporters said the law makes tribal members eligible for college scholarships, grants and the right to sell crafts labeled as Native American.
They also said the state's validation of the existence of the Abenaki and all American Indians in Vermont ...
Detractors feared state recognition would lead to federal recognition and possibly land claims and gambling casinos in Vermont...
In 1976, the tribe also won state recognition, but the ruling was rescinded after the state Supreme Court questioned its constitutionality.

the biggest reason for many inequities for decades.
The Indians, by U.S.law, own a third of the land in the U.S. - gotta keep 'em down. (snark...)
Good for them. They've always been a tribe. Saying they weren't didn't make it so.
There was a time when the Native Americans were designated, by the U. S. Government, as "aliens" -
You can't have recognition at the state level. It's a matter reserved by the Constitution to the federal government (Congress has plenary jurisdiction over Indian tribes).
This action is purely symbolic, and to the extent tribes are given special treatment by the state it probably violates the 14th Amendment. See U.S. S.Ct. case of Rice v. Cayetano.
I say give all of Vermont to the Abenaki!!! A state that has plagued us with the likes of Howie "Moonbat" Dean, Jumpin' Jim Jeffords, Patsy Patrick Leahy, and Bozo Bernie Sanders is a major detriment to the national quality of life. Surely the Abenaki could not do much worse......let them have the place.

I didn't know anyone knew who the Abenaki were. Those few drops of Indian blood I have flowing through my veins are from an Abenaki woman. The only other time I heard anything about the Abenaki was when Wes Studi spit the word Abenaki out in "The Last of the Mohicans." They weren't one of this country's more popular tribes. LOL!
The pueblo tribes like the Hopi, Tewa, Zuni, Acoma, etc.
plus the Navajo and Apaches ( from Canada or Alaska )
plus the Pima...
must not want to be part of Aztlan.
