House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took on a rare role yesterday as a defender of President Bush.
Hoyer came to the defense of the commander in chief after Saturdays White House Correspondents Association dinner, where the president took a drubbing from comedian Stephen Colbert.
I thought some of it was funny, but I think it got a little rough, Hoyer said. He is the president of the United States, and he deserves some respect.
Im certainly not a defender of the administration, Hoyer reassured stunned observers, but Colbert crossed the line with many jokes that were in bad taste.
Colbert needled Bush, often prompting only an expressionless stare from the president, who appeared not to be amused.
I didn't know Democrats knew what "bad taste" was.
Well..good for hoyer..my question I have been asking for the past couple of years is this..where is this generation's Bob Hope???..I realize Hope was a true talent and hard to imitate..but come on..does everything have to be so hateful towards the President????
The new Bob Hopes are indeed entertaining the troops. The troops fighting against us.
To take up Hoyer's point, there is a bright line that Colbert stepped over. If I were to encounter Bill Clinton, I would be polite and deferential. Colbert forgets his place. He is, after all, just a well-paid clown.
Good point. In another era, actors lined up to enlist and do what they could, some behind the lines, some right up on the front in combat.
They were repaid by their public with an affection and respect to the end of their lives. And they had a weight and seriousness in their roles that comes from having actually lived life.
Today's actors suffer by comparison to those, and they suffer by comparison to our own kids. This is what is killing them as actors, how can you take any of these guys seriously as men of action when they are so limp and faded next to your own nephew in the marines? I'm having a hard time looking at any of these guys in an action role, now, without giggling.
As for Colbert, I never watched him much, haven't watched him in a while, missed his performance in front of the president, and have no reason ever to share my waking moments with him ever. As a comic, he has his moments, but he's frankly not that deep.
And, clearly, not much of a man either. Especially compared to my nephew.
You said what I had been observing. The arrogance of entertainers to think they can speak with such defiance and authority with such seriousness to the President of the U.S. Bush has just been too passive against these liberal onslaughts. He should have gone to war against these sluts a long time ago.
Dennis Miller.
Helen Thomas thought it was so "just for fun" hilarious...her Pampers were soaking wet...
Uh... there's a Wayne Newton in that picture? I don't see anything but a Dallas Cowboy's cheerleader. What am I missing?
Apparently, your peripheral vision. LOL
As a former soldier, I'm gonna let you know that the troops on the ground also didn't see a Wayne Newton on that stage. ;)
If the Dems win the House, Hoyer will be Speaker, NOT Pelosi. Bet on it.
George gets no respect from anyone.
Just a few weeks ago he and Laura went to the Home Depot to get a smoke alarm for the Texas ranch. They sold him one with a snooze alarm!
"I am a tax and spend democrat."
