Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said on Monday that he was seriously exploring whether he has "a chance" of winning the presidency in 2008, as he visited politically important Iowa and huddled with state advisers, donors to President Bush and other prominent Republicans. While Mr. Giuliani was officially in Iowa to attend two Republican fund-raisers, his behavior and remarks came close to politicking for himself. He ruminated openly about running, disclosed he was not sure what he would do if his friend John McCain also ran, and argued that if Republicans are to be a majority party, they need to accept politicians like himself who support abortion rights, gay rights and gun control.
"I've got a lot of places to go and a lot of people to talk to and a long process of figuring out whether it makes sense to run for president in 2008," Mr. Giuliani said before speaking at a daytime fund-raiser in Des Moines for a Republican congressional candidate. "I don't know the answer to that yet."
He added: "My effort this year will be to help Republicans get elected, and then, quite honestly, as part of it, saying to myself, does it look like I have a chance in 2008? And make that decision after the 2006 election."
At a fund-raiser in Davenport on Monday night, Mr. Giuliani offered a stout defense of President Bush's leadership, arguing that the economy was growing and that Mr. Bush would go down in history as "a great president."
"I don't know what we're all so upset about," he said, referring to concerns about the economy and rising costs, such as gas prices.

In other words, you don't want to address the fact that Senator Allen supported the "Assault Weapons Ban" when he thought it was the politically profitable thing to do.
Since you're the expert that the other poster called in to speak for the Senator's positions, maybe you can address a couple other major concerns of mine:
What's with this crazy "life begins at brainwaves" position? Is it true, as one organization's responses to their questionaire from the Senator would lead us to believe, that the Senator supports abortion up until "viability" (in other words 98% of the abortions that are committed now)? Does he REALLY support aborting babes in the womb if they have "fetal abnormalities"?
And does he really believe that a "virtual fence" is going to slow down the flood of illegal aliens coming through our southern border?
Is he going to support a "guest worker" program or not?
Tell me why we shouldn't be suspicious of his immigration stances since he hired Ed Gillespie, the leading Open Borders lobbyist in Washington, DC as his top money man, and since his rhetoric almost exactly mirrors the rhetoric that we've gotten all along from this White House?
One last question: Since these are all obviously positions that the Senator takes, do you, as a conservative, agree with him on them?

Voters in the town of Herndon, Virginia delivered a stunning rebuke today to elected officials who opened a taxpayer funded day labor center for illegal aliens in the town last year. Incumbent mayor Michael O'Reilly lost to Steven DeBenedittis while five of the six at-large town council seats went to candidates opposing the day labor center.

There's nothing 'moderate' about an abortion. Any abortion.
What about Allen being a part of W's good Ol boy crew which orchestrated the largest expansion of government in our countries history? They have beaten out the far left in terms of expanding government and squandering tax payer money.
I like "good old boys" if they're the real deal and not just political drug store cowboys. But your points about spending are certainly on the mark.

Sorry man. You're kidding yourself if you think any moderate to liberal Republican is ever gonna do that stuff. I've seen it time and again. They talk tough, but when push comes to shove, they're just as liberal on fiscal matters as on anything else. Think Christie Todd Whitman.

Corin, pinged me to answer some questions concerning Allen's position on the 2nd Amendment and I posted some information that I thought was relevant to the issue. I am not prepared to discuss his positions on abortion and immigration, other than to state that in the 10 plus years that I have known him, he has impressed me as being genuinely pro-life, and though I am not crazy about the "virtual fence" statement, feel that he is more in line with Tom Tancredo, than George Bush on immigration.

ALL of these issues have been explained to him over and over. He just won't listen.
I just got off the phone with a friend who is ~very~ close to the Allen camp (and has been for years). I told her some of the things folks like EV have been saying.

I've raised legitimate questions about Senator Allen's positions on some of the most important items on our national agenda.
