There's a taste for everyone. It was my son who got me back on cigars some years ago when he gave me a fine one for Father's Day. Since then, I average 10-12 a year, and none during Winter months (Northern Illinois...and I don't smoke inside).
It's like good bourbon. There is something magnificent about it, but it can be overdone, and then loses its value.

Oh, there are some nice smelling cigars. But, usually those big fat ones are stinky to me. We had to ride in the car with my dad smoking those big cigars (forgot which kind) but I got sick of the smell.

Actually, I've smelled some cigars that smell like a good bourbon! Those that smell liquor-laced are yummy in the olfactory factory.

You've had aversion therapy, that's why you don't like them. That's nasty being stuck in a car with a burning cigar. Sometimes even smokers don't enjoy cigars in close spaces.

I don't know about 'liquor-laced' cigars, or those that smell that way. I go strctly by taste and aroma, but the aroma part has never smelled like bourbon to me.
Of my two favorites, one (Ashton) is a milder cigar with a natural (medium) wrap. The Excaliber I like is a mid-full strength cigar (in dark or maduro) wrap. The Excaliber sometimes tastes (as some other maduros) close to chocolate to me, but I don't ever recall one that tasted like whiskey. Not to say they aren't out there.
Again it's in the taste of the beholder. Next time you smell one of those cigars that pleases you, ask the smoker what it is, and compliment him on his choice.

HEHEHE....better to be honest and say it upfront.
By the way, I like the smell of cigars (good ones) and Pipe tobacco too.
;o)

I only know what my ignorant nose tells me when it comes to cigars. I don't even smoke cigarettes. I know what I like and it's good enough for me.
Your suggestion to compliment a smoker on a good cigar is one I'll follow up.

"Your suggestion to compliment a smoker on a good cigar is one I'll follow up."Good for you! My wife is a former smoker. And with my not smoking inside we can sympathize with non-smokers who hate the smell of smoke in restaurants, etc. This is really why I don't smoke inside.
That being said, cigars are a real pleasure to me, and it's always enjoyable to know that my cigar also brings pleasure to someone else. Oh, and my wife has no problem with my cigars.

Whether is judging book covers or cigars, it's like what we say about art, "I don't know much about it, but I know what I like."
