The good news is that only a few missed their white-collar jobs.
So what if the governor's hired help laid out today ?

Could have been propaganda on the news this morning, then. They gave an example of local laborers being fired and replaced with cheaper "immigrant" labor.

... a news report out of NOLA that hints that the nativer blacks are being shut out of the rebuilding process ...

Everyone [who has not returned to the city, and who has not applied for employment] is being shut out ... Y' gotta get yourself there [instead of waiting for someone to take you there] ... and y' gotta make yourself available for employment ....

This may be an old fashioned concept ... but it is called gumption.

Suggestion.

Think about why he walked out on the job. It was because he refused to do a days work because a coworker expressed an opinion that the disagreed with.

How many of us have to work with coworkers who express opinions with which we don't agree?

I don't think that gives us a reason to "walk off the job."

Grounds for dismissal: leaving the job in a fit of anger?

His mom knows he is wrong and should be fired, or else she wouldn't be calling, hoping to save his job.

Nope, he doesn't care about his job.

Let him go. If you don't, you can't expect ANY of your workers to work on days when they don't want to.

Also, he should apologize to the woman whom he swore at. And to the employer's representative.

Walking off the job is considered "abandonment". He quit. Don't fire him or you'll have to pay unemployment on him. It's job abandonment.

The Mexican laborers here aren't really taking jobs away from anyone. There was a sudden surge of demand for construction work after Katrina. Believe me, we have enough jobs to go around. The limiting factor is housing. It's not that the immigrants here are doing the jobs Americans won't do; they'e living in housing that Americans won't live in.

The housing issue is a big part of the situation. I saw truckloads of Hispanics, most probably illegals, trolling East Bank Jefferson parish neighborhoods. They were out picking up the duct-taped refrigerators from areas that didn't flood. I later saw refrigerators with remnants of duct tape still attached, around those nasty old motels on Airline Hwy. They didn't care about the stench, so long as the fridges still worked.

Here's the part that has local law enforcement officers very concerned: they are seeing evidence that Hispanic gangs are trying to get a foothold in New Orleans. Before, the home-grown thugs were sufficiently violent to keep out the "big" gangs - but most of our previous criminals are gone to Texas, so to speak.

If these gangs do gain traction and then the resident criminals come home and try to re-assert their territory, there will be one heck of a bloodbath (with a *major* "good riddance" factor, though).

Yeah, MS-13 wants in. Thing is, the old gangs were all connected to housing projects. When they relocated to Houston, they all got together and restarted their gangs.

There was a whole article posted about this a while back... Houston gang members take it as an insult if you ask them if they're from New Orleans. They see New Orleans gangsters as just insane. And these are international drug smugglers we're talking about here.

'course, there's still the question of whether they'll be coming back. Houston jails and morgues are filling up with New Orleans gang members as we speak.

"My problem?"

If you fire him, your problem is the ACLU. Fire him, regardless.

I suppose I could take away his raise, and then he'll quit! No unemployment due if he quits!

I'm inclined to cut him a little slack because his brother works here and his step father is on leave from here while he is deployed with the Natl. Guard.

But this is not the first time this kid has shot off his mouth. He did that to me over a mis-perception about his pay check compared to his friend's pay check. They had a difference in the number of deductions declared so that equal time worked did not yield equal checks. He kicked up a scream fest outside my door when I was I conference with one of my supervisors. He apologized later and I told him it had better not happen again.

AH! The argument is that they ARE 'Americans'-meaning North Americans- and therefore citizens of the continent. They recognize no borders, they claim the entire continent.
Has anyone told Canada this?
And does it work both ways? Are we not North Americans? Can
we flood into Canada or any country south of the border and demand 'rights' there?
Very slick- we should make it backfire on them.

FWIW- Is this guy worth keeping? If so, here's what I would do.

I'd sit him down, tell him to relax, and simply explain to him that not everybody will agree on everything, and you will have to always people who disagree with you or (gasp!) plain ole just don't like you. Their dislike can come from many sources--but it's their problem--not yours. As long as you do your job well and focus on your own responsibilities you will go far in life. You perhaps might want to relate a personal experience in which you had to do a job you maybe didn't care for, or had to work with people who didn't like you. The point is that everybody has to deal with this kind of stuff. Get a helmet.

I'd also point out that perhaps the 65 year old feels the same way that he does; that she doesn't get any respect from him! Perhaps he should be a man, apologize and discuss/resolve the incident so there's no "uncomfortable cloud" hanging over the work place.

After resolution on that issue, I'd then surprise him I'd explain that I'm most upset about is his mother calling you up and pleading his case. Tell him you expect adult behavior from your workers, and that he's 18 and his mother doesn't work here. I wouldn't tell him this but, in fact his yelling at an older woman in the workplace, and having his mother call you indicates that he has much experience manipulating older women, and probably women in general. And he probably yells and storms out when he doesn't get his way, or is told something he disagrees with...

By doing this, you come to an agreement and understanding about workplace relationship problems (which everybody has) and how to not let them effect one's performance and workplace environment (which not everybody knows how to practice). Your real criticism with him is having his mother call, which is inarguable and embarrassing for him to gossip about or complain about to other co-workers. He'll understand that doing that kind of crap makes him less of a man, which is very important to 18 year olds (esp. Puerto Ricans IMHO)

If, on the other hand, you want to get rid of him anyway, tell him his walking out was a voluntary resignation and to hit the road.

Tell, him that you can see he has a lot of potential. And that you fear his current job is holding him back from his true talent and ability. You feel it is in his best interest that you allow him the opportunity to seek out a job that will truly reflect that potential. As much as you will miss him, it just would not be right to stifle such an enterprising young man. You hope his future is the one he truly deserves. He has shown you many times by his actions just how far he will go and you are honored to be the one to send him on his way.
PS. Please practice this so you can keep a straight face.

Nice of them to selectively crop the sign. Any bets on whether the rest of the sign says "Worker's Party UNITE!" or "GO, RACIST WHITE INVADERS!" or other such silliness?

How will this nation survive if 100% of the reporters and photographers in the field absolutely hate it?
