Senate Coverage -- (May '06)

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

I know that is one of their "aces in hole", but with the ACLU, and over half of the Republicans ready to hand the US over to the Mexicans...they won't NEED those judges, will they?

I cannot stand it when they do that! They are either lying about these "talks"....or they are exploiting the dead troops for political reasons!

I didn't hear his speech .. though I would guess it's both .. but leaning more on the exploiting part

LOL. DiFi says that, under her plan, all illegals must immediately register. Then they would be vetted through a thorough and orderly process. There are at the least 12 million. I think 20 million is more realistic. They get fingerprinted and a thorough background check will be conducted. They pay $2,000 and these fees will pay for this program. (I feel like I have gone through the looking glass)

Or what????

What is she going to do to catch the ones that don't register

Or what????

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It should be clear to anyone who follows this that the federal government is completely incapable of handling any program of this magnitude. If they actually enact something like this, the instance of fraud...illegals just paying off officials to get the necessary paperwork...will be beyond our imagination. And they won't be paying $2,000, they'll be paying much more...but it won't be going to the government.

Exactly! We have no "or else" in our arsenal, do we??

They know that...

None of this is going to happen....and I am praying that all of this last 2 weeks in the Senate will be a big waste of time..

IF we have to have a bill right now...I vote for the HOUSE version...because poor Sessions, Kyl, Cornyn are getting ignored by the other Senators...and I am like Sessions, no matter WHAT, this Senate bill must NOT PASS!

Well, at least DiFi is pointing out that Hagel/Martinez creates a bureaucratic nightmare and is an invitation to fraud and no one would have been deported under it anyway. Now we just need someone to point out that her nonsense creates the same problems.

I know...I was thinking to myself that she points out the flaws in that bill...but, then puts forth at least as flawed ideas of her own...

If this wasn't so serious...it really is funny to hear how these Senators are trying to dress up this "sow's ear" of a bill...and make something sound "feasible" that is just wrongheaded to begin with.

They work so hard to prove to everyone that this is not amnesty. Notice DiFi says that, if they don't meet the criteria, they are "deportable."

LOL. Sessions was in the chair for all of that, peering over his glasses...in which he looks cute-as-a-button, btw.

Did you note the Orange Card mock-up she used? The 'country of birth' was Canada. I'm reminded of an old Stan Freburg routine involving a western hero and his loyal side-kick Pancho. Asked if he's Mexican, Pancho replies, "No, senior, Swiss. That way we don' offend nobody."

LOLOL. I actually remember that. I also noted that the young lady in the picture was quite attractive and all American girl looking with a kind of a DiFi hairdo. Lots of subliminals there.

Yes, he does look cute in his glasses...

I didn't know that he was in the chair for Difi's speech..what do you want to bet that instead of doodling, he was making notes to be used later!! I HOPE.

Grassley up saying he doesn't want to fall for the same amnesty scheme that he fell for in 1986...

If that is true, he needs to join Sessions and do what he can to defeat this Senate bill.

I am praying that Tony Snow is telling President Bush to wait and see what comes out of the conference IF anything does...but, that if any semblance of what is being debated on the Senate floor is part of it...VETO IT!

Good idea to wait and see. Grassley is pointing out that much of this bill does not pass the laugh test.

I call his office regularly and thank him. It's quite clear I am not a constituent and always make sure to tell them that I'm not.....but then my joisey accent gives me away.
