Senate Coverage -- (May '06)

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

I LOVE that Sessions is saying this bill isn't worthy of the Senate...I feel the same way.

I am also glad he said they should just go with what the House has done...and do the rest later.

However, he is probably as resigned as I am that this boondoogle is going to pass.

Session's up saying this bill should NEVER pass

I would certainly agree with him on that.

I guess I heard it wrong...did he say it wouldn't pass??

Wow...I don't know how he figures he can come up with 50 other Senators that will vote against this..

But, I love his optomism.

Hagel saying that Bolton didn't say what Sessions said...but, he didn't say that Bolton said that Bush like THEIR bill either....LOL

BTW .. has anyone figured out if the President actually said he supported McCain or Hagel's Bill??

I keep seeing it being reported .. but I don't remember the President say he was for it .. just that he wanted a bill

I believe Senator Sessions said he thought the bill would pass, but that it shouldn't. Interesting that 17 senators changed their votes to yes on the fence after they realized it was going to pass. In fact, it costs them nothing because I expect they have no intention of actually appropriating the money for it.

Cornyn has an amendment that will allow ICE to share information if they detect fraud in applications. Currently, they are not allowed to do so and the bill as it currently exists does not fix that.

They can't share it now??

Good grief

Mo1...did you notice in that article you linked re: two English language amendments passing....that President Bush likes they both???

I read that article, and I just go more and more disgusted with this whole mess that is coming out of the Senate..just like Sessions is.

Sessions SHOULD be the one guest that all of the Sunday Morning talks shows want to have...he is the most honest, knowledgeable Congressperson on this subject.

What do you bet he isn't on one??

BTW...He did just say that he spoke to President Bush the other day...and the President does want a "temorary" program..I think that is what he said last night that got Hagel all hot and bothered...

Sessions is doing a bang up job picking this thing apart and boy oh boy, is he ever taking a stick to our "elitist" so-called leaders. Apparently, Senators Hagel/Menendez/McCain/Kennedy got together with pro-immigrant groups to come up with their "compromise" and Senator Sessions is not happy about it. The only group not represented at the table on this, it appears, was the American voter.

Just FYI....

Tomorrow there are a few "interesting things" on C-span besides the Senate...

On C-span at 10:30 is a "forum" about Intelligence with Jane Harman and John Podesta!!!! These is some lib-lovin for you!! LOL

On c-span 2 in the morning is a forum on immigration with Tamar Jacoby....I saw her on with Neil Cavuto..she would never shut up, and I got the feeling that if she had been in the studio, Neil would have bonked her in the head..what a screech-owl.

Later, 2:30 on C-span 3, probably boring, because of the technical talk..but important...Pete Domenici is having a hearing with Bingamen about nuclear energy, and building more nuke energy sites..which we desperately NEED, but it is one of those NIMBY topics.

Hey...I am starting to sound like Phsstpok with his Sunday Preview threads, huh?? NO>..well, of course, I don't have his style, wit, links, intelligence, but I do have time on my hands tonight...so this is what ya'll get!! LOL

C YA tomorrow.

Howdy...there are some interesting threads today...if the Senate is boring...at least there is somewhere else to go!!

Frist just named about 4 things the "need to get done this week"...and oh, by the way, the immigration bill is just one of them...they are also expecting the Emergency Supplemental Bill out of conference...which will require debate...and I think there are some nominations..

Then Harry Reid stood up and mentioned some kind of bill that I didn't hear...and said he wants IT to be handled this week..

Also, remember since they are going on at least a week's recess for the one day Memorial Day holiday...they will NEED a "get away day"...which is Friday....so, they are looking at about 2 and a half days to get all of this done.

Therefore, how much thought and debate do ya'll think will go into the immigration bill this week?? Anyone? Anyone?

Harry Reid is going to give one of his personal, heart tugging speeches about two moms whose sons were killed in Iraq. One of Hungarian descent. Another with an Hispanic last name.

When he started that crapola, I muted the TV!!!

I cannot stand it when they do that! They are either lying about these "talks"....or they are exploiting the dead troops for political reasons!

Just DAMN! (to quote a famous freeper, that I haven't seen around lately)

You should be listening. This is the issue you pointed to again. Reid is citing the Senate resolution about a year of significant change in Iraq, says this is the law of the land and it's no surprise that this Administration is ignoring it again.

Domenici is actually going to introduce an amendment to require the Sec of State to cooperate with Mexico on the border issue. This is the idea that Dodd floated last week. Let's just call this the "Sell Out to Mexico" amendment. It includes cooperation with respect to education regarding eligibility for status to ensure they are not exploited while in the US. We will be educating them on their "rights." There will be the all-imprortant "annual report" from the SOS to congress which is only read for things to criticize and for which the SOS is too damn busy anyway.

He also has an amendment on judges. I wonder if this is part of the attempt to pack the courts with immigration lawyers.

When I heard Domenici say that his amendment REQUIRES the Sec of State of OUR country, to cooperate with a country that has actively sent their poor people here, in order to send money BACK to help their country...

I about threw something at the TV!

BTW...did you see that new thread with the article by Mark Levin??
