Teacher Suspended For Offering Extra Credit For Wendy's Cups

POSTED: 3:10 pm EDT April 27, 2006

DELAND, Fla. -- A first-year teacher was suspended for five days without pay after offering students extra credit for bringing in paper cups from a Wendy's restaurant that he could cash in for a free plane ticket.

The Volusia County school district found Scott Keatley, 23, guilty of unprofessional conduct and determined he exploited his relationship with students for personal gain. He was suspended Tuesday night.

An internal school investigation found that Keatley, who teaches social studies, gave students extra credit toward their final grades if they brought in specially marked cups being offered in an AirTran Airways promotion.

A letter from the district's professional-standards director also reprimanded Keatley for exposing students to a Web site that contained profane language. There was no further explanation of the site.

Keatley said he didn't know that collecting the cups was wrong, and he immediately called AirTran to have the promotion credits removed from his account.

Keatley also said he inadvertently exposed ninth-graders last semester to a satirical Web site that contained mild profanity while teaching a lesson on Greek political satire.

"As soon as it came up, I put it down," he said.

Keatley called the situation "a nightmare."

"This will stay with me forever," he said. "Plus I'm probably going to lose my job."

No way. He will be reassigned, at most. The union will go to bat for him. Without that kind of protection, he would noy have done such stupid stuff in the first place.

PAPHOS, Cyprus Apr 30, 2006 (AP)— Campaigners in Cyprus on Sunday said they had created the world's longest chain of bras to raise awareness of breast cancer and win a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The activists said they managed to string together some 114,000 bras, beating the current record held in Singapore since 2003, of 79,000 bras.

That's what I thought. Those cups would have just ended up in the trash anyhow. As for the website thing. He should have reviewed it first, but stuff like that happens. I remember my sophmore English teacher showing us Excalibur. He stood in front of and fast forwarded through the naked part.

We had two separate cases of teachers being convicted of selling drugs to their students (on campus) and neither one lost their jobs.

oh brother... i can't believe this is even news... this isn't much different than the GSA having those poor little girls selling cookies so that the GSA administration can have their elegant and plush offices...

Well, I don't know about those particular cases, but this was a first year teacher. I imagine we (if I ever get a doggone job!) are easier to fire.
