LOS ANGELES - That Cardinal Roger Mahony attended grammar school here, in the modest St. Charles Borromeo parish more than a half-century ago, was a fact lost on many parishioners on a recent Sunday. But little else is forgotten about the neighborhood-kid-done-good whose national profile has been on the rise, largely for his willingness to take on controversy, especially his stand on illegal immigration. Mahony, 70, who leads the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, is scheduled to participate in today's planned mass protests in Los Angeles, except not the one to be held downtown.
Rather, after celebrating noon Mass at Los Angeles' Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels today, Mahony will march in a barrio. Mahony has often been said to have a common touch among Latino immigrants. When newly ordained in the 1960s, Mahony sought a remote post in rural Fresno, Calif., where he worked with immigrant farm laborers and their then-leader, Cesar Chavez.
ALL DAY PING. Aiding and abetting illegal.
You despise Roman Catholics, so anything the Catholic Church does is a "religious conflict" to you.
Illegal aliens rarely go to Mass.
The mandatory, knuckle-dragger post.
Great strategy. Deflect attention from his own sins.
"Well, the church has to fill the collection plates somehow."
I've seen this type of comment often here at Freep.
It doesn't make sense.
These illegals were already catholic. Whatever Mahoney is doing has nothing to do with trying to attact them to the Church. He really does believe in this cause...but it is his personal opinion. The members of the Church are split on this just like the members of the political parties are split on it...just like many Americans are split on it.
What an unlikely combination! Catholic clergy and communists!!
"What an unlikely combination! Catholic clergy and communists!!"
Read much about the life of John Paul II?
Just another of V.I.Lenin's "Useful Idiots" on the Wide road to destruction.

Are you saying what I think you're saying?
Let me tell you one thing. Mahoney is WRONG, and he does not speak for the Church.
Yours and Mia T's posts are so off-the-wall that they leave one grasping for some kind of response.
I was wondering the same thing, but it's such a beautiful day, I didn't really want to go there.
This beautiful day has the makings of turning ugly. I haven't turned on the tv. Yet.
I went to Mass this morning. NOT one word about Commie day and the illegal immigrants.
Clearly Roger Mahoney does not believe in the Holy Word of G-d: Y'shua.Y'shua's kingdom is not of this world.Ro. 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities,
for there is no authority except that which God has
established. The authorities that exist have been established
by God.Ro. 13:2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling
against what God has instituted, and those who do so will
bring judgment on themselves.Ro. 13:3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those
who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one
in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

"You don't agree with Lumen Gentium then: "
The passage you provided deals with the Pope and the Magisterium - of which Mahoney is A PART - but Mahoney does not fully represent the Magisterium - nor does he alone decide the teaching.
Mahoney is not representing Church teaching here...he is just acting like a typical liberal....which he is.
The Church has a wide spectrum of bishops and cardinals in the Magisterium...many of whom would disagree with Mahoney.
Does anyone happen to have a link to the flyer that lists the organizers of today's boycott?
I may be off base on the various pronouncements from the Pope, and am willing to reconsider that part over time, but I still don't think I'm required to adhere to the POLITICAL pronouncements of a Bishop.
