LOS ANGELES - That Cardinal Roger Mahony attended grammar school here, in the modest St. Charles Borromeo parish more than a half-century ago, was a fact lost on many parishioners on a recent Sunday. But little else is forgotten about the neighborhood-kid-done-good whose national profile has been on the rise, largely for his willingness to take on controversy, especially his stand on illegal immigration. Mahony, 70, who leads the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, is scheduled to participate in today's planned mass protests in Los Angeles, except not the one to be held downtown.
Rather, after celebrating noon Mass at Los Angeles' Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels today, Mahony will march in a barrio. Mahony has often been said to have a common touch among Latino immigrants. When newly ordained in the 1960s, Mahony sought a remote post in rural Fresno, Calif., where he worked with immigrant farm laborers and their then-leader, Cesar Chavez.
Well, the church has to fill the collection plates somehow.
This franchise held by our American Catholic Church bishops needs to be revoked. Like American politicians, these bishops need reinstallation.

AIDING AND ABETTING ILLEGAL ALIENS:
Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."
Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):
Penalties upon conviction include criminal fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of vehicles and real property used to commit the crime. Anyone employing or contracting with an illegal alien without verifying his or her work authorization status is guilty of a misdemeanor. Aliens and employers violating immigration laws are subject to arrest, detention, and seizure of their vehicles or property. In addition, individuals or entities who engage in racketeering enterprises that commit (or conspire to commit) immigration-related felonies are subject to private civil suits for treble damages and injunctive relief.
Exactly. This is all about coins in the plate and fannies in the pews. The Catholic Church is looking at the issue from a strictly business perspective and that's shameful.
The Catholic church may not have borders but countries do.
What a jerk.
Good post.
Perhaps its time for Cardinal Mahoney to joing the illegals in Mexico?
joing=join
Hmm, maybe I coined a new word?
"Cardinal Roger Mahony"
I wish this guy's butt was also kicked out of the country permanently for aiding and abetting. Let him take confessionals in Chiapas.
ROFL. You're evil.
"who leads the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, is scheduled to participate in today's planned mass protests in Los Angeles, except not the one to be held downtown."
It's time to reconsider the tax exempt status of any religious organization that doesn't follow the rule of the law including immigration law. Let the Catholic Church pay taxes like law abiding people and businesses.
I think most Catholics disagree and disapprove of what Mahoney and some others are doing. I also know that what the Bishops say is NOT binding on us as Catholics and only "ex cathedra" pronouncements from the Pope can compel obedience. Mahoney is taking a political stance here - no matter how he tries to cloak it in some kind of moral ledgermain - and Catholics can, and I believe will, reject it.
Ah, he's just trolling for some brown sugar.
Mahoney is as close to a heretic as we have in the Catholic Church.
To say that Mahoney and his ilk are the reason why people are leaving the Catholic Church, is like saying that Olympia Snow is the reason why people are leaving the GOP.
People may be leaving because they are subjected to Mahoney's circus, but in all truth, in those places where the Bishops stick to the true teachings of the church, they are growing by leaps and bounds.
Such an outrage! so holy in his position (the cardinal)...
You've made the same mistake the anti-Catholic bigots make.
Mahony's position is not the official policy of the Catholic Church. Mahony is in error on Catholic immigration policy, which acknowledges that immigration laws must be respected.
