There is no indication that Bush is acting for any reason other than to prop up American business profits.

As much as I've been critical of Bush's (lack of) border enforcement policy, I can't bring myself to believe that he's as corrupt as you state. Rather, I agree with suppositions made by other posters: the larger battle is the WoT & Iran.

In this scenario, we can't afford to have a 2nd front in the form of an unstable country on our southern border lurching towards some sort of marxist upheaval. So we let them bleed off their population and let the US taxpayer shoulder the load.

Bush is gambling our long-term national cultural heritage against the nearer-term threat of a nuclear equipped Islamic foe. I just wish he would come out and say so instead of looking like (a) a dunce, and/or (b) a corrupt crony of business interests.

And suppose the majority of them return here legally. Just what will actually change?

"Do you assume all immigrants get sick? And how do you determine who is legal or illegal? Do you ask to see their papers?"

I assume everyone eventually gets sick.
I also assume if you are illegal you are NOT paying taxes and do NOT have health insurance. I don't need to ask to see their papers, all I have to do is sit back and watch the hospitals go bankrupt.

You still didn't explain how these honorable citizens are paying taxes or why they don't become legal.

1. Citizens of another country who deliberately work to hold our country "hostage" are TERRORISTS. This is an act of terrorism. Our government is supporting it...we are paying for it. Keep reading.

2. Our cities have granted PERMITS to these illegals to rally. This means:

a) Our cities will be paying for security/police whose salaries are PAID FOR BY TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS

b) Our cities will be paying for cleanup of these rallies. That will, of course be PAID FOR BY TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS

c) Our cities will be paying for repair of the damage done at these rallies, which (again) be PAID FOR BY TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS

d) No doubt some of these rally participants will need medical attention today, which will be PAID FOR BY TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS

WHY DID OUR CITIES GRANT THESE PERMITS????? WHAT KIND OF RECOURSE DO WE, THE TAXPAYERS, HAVE WHEN OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGREED TO ALLOW THIS, AND OUR MONEY TO PAY FOR IT???!

If these people were citizens, I would have no problem with them having the right to protest...but they shouldn't share the rights of citizens, they are not citizens!

If they came in legally and did it the right way, I say WELCOME HOME! If they snuck in and are not taxpaying, green-card holding workers, I say round them up and send them back.

I have no way of knowing (and neither do you unless you employ them) who pays taxes and who has health insurance. I don't have health insurance and it makes life very difficult. I have sympathy for them I guess. And growing up in So. Fla. I saw what Cubans did for Miami. It really was a win/win situation there.

Vast difference between Cuban immigrants and the illegal, illiterate Mexican variety.

Agree. I can't stand the isolationists/Buchananites/conspiracy people who think it's all about trade. People actually believe things because they believe them. Bush actually believes he is a humanitarian by being "compassionate" with these illegals. It has nothing whatsoever to do with business profits---quite the contrary, he probably thinks that overall the illegals are hurting American business, but that it's still the "right thing to do."

Many of our great presidents were deeply flawed like this. Teddy Roosevelt was a nincompoop when it came to business and the economy: he savaged corporations, but in the process, research has shown, he severly damaged "small businesses." Great on foreign relations and patriotism, he nevertheless stifled economic growth in his administrations.

Bush was good for two big visions: defeat the Jihadists and revive the economy. He apparently doesn't have a third in him. Ok, neither did the great god Ronald Reagan, who gave out our first amnesty, and who allowed welfare spending to rise and who allowed the federal government to grow under his watch. But he defeated the Soviets and got the economy out of the doldrums.

Presidents, like most people, can only do one or two things really well. After that, it's mush. If you don't believe me, watch me play golf some time.

So let's teach them to read. And I doubt if all immigrants from Mexico are illiterate. Why not get rid of our American illiterates while we're at it?

While the 'Bent One' was exalted for his ability to compartmentalize, I think Bush is essentially utilizing the same tactic, except in a much bigger geo-strategic game.

He knows our primary threat is Islamic WMDs, which means we just can't afford to take our eyes off the ball in terms of collective focus.

Illegal immigration has to be brought under control at some point, but right now it's like any triage situation: Iran needs immediate attention right now, while Mexico only needs to be managed so it doesn't fall off a cliff. That means continued taxpayer support illegal immigration in the short-term.

Well, I think we can do a LITTLE better than that. Begin with simple enforcement of who comes in. Then we'll work on the deportations.

I don't have a problem with that. This nation was built by honest, hard-working, legal immigrants. We take in thousands of them each year. What I have a problem with are those who violate our laws and then demand that we change our system to give them the rights that citizens and legal immigrants have worked for.

So let's teach them to read.

Why not deport them instead?

Let their government teach them to read. Why should all the services (education, health care, welfare, etc.) be extended to those that crawl in our windows while our government sleeps?

You may doubt forever, but the fact remains that most of those creeping across the border are illiterates. Why else would they come here when our NAFTA agreement has helped so many millions of Mexicans obtain lucrative employment. (Sarcasm)

Unfortunately, in the case of the American citizen illiterates, as long as there is a television to lull them into a stupor they will remain illiterates.

So, why take on the world's idiots?

Well, there is strength in numbers but we'll see how much effect this boycott really has. That will tell how important they are to the U.S..

We simply need a third party in this country that is a strong conservative party and in charge of all 3 branches of the government. A party that reduces the size of the government, secures our borders, enforces its own laws, breaks up monopolistic corporations in the US doing business, gets out of the taxpayers back pocket, continues the WOT, promotes international trade that is fair (i.e. simple realization that no way with our current standard of living and tax burden in the US, that the US worker can compete with the labor costs of 3rd word/communist nations), etc., etc.

The best way to fight the crap is to get the right people in charge of the government.....We must protect ourselves from fascists, etc. at the same time.

Like Ann Coulter said: deport a few at a time. Today is a
wonderful opportunity to pick up a million or so!

So what you're really saying is that we need a SECOND party don't we? In our current set-up it seems to me that we have two separate wings of the same socialist party.

Yes. Basically, the are few Zell Millers left in the Democratic party that is in Congress or state governments, anywhere. In the GOP, there may be a few Reaganites in office, but, for the most part, a bunch of RHINOS. Guess political image and repayment to large contributors have the highest priority for any politicians, 'cause, well, frankly, it's been a while since I've seen a true statesman / stateswoman.

What we have been witnessing this past century is the onslaught of societal euthanasia where factions from the Left have pressed ever harder for the growth of the Welfare State. Now, those across the world, less fortunate than many here in the US, have 'heard the word' and are on a stampede to get into America by whatever mean and onto Uncle Sam's coattails for the free handouts and hopefully, amnesty.

Without a doubt the concept and the reality of The Welfare State has been sold as by the media, the schools, and the feds as 'Social Justice".

Political Correctness is by far the most recent and relevant phenomena present to support my personal view as a sincere lack of spine by most politicians.

I call it the Stalinization of America.

"But that’s exactly what the Left’s Walter Durantys and Dan Rathers, who continue to infiltrate the elite media, still don’t understand about the real cost of freedom: It always carries a price tag the Left thinks America shouldn’t pay – despite their daily abusing the free speech and press they employ to ruin their opponents. In effect, McCarthyism was never really about the so-called “blacklisting” that Communist sympathizers decried, as much as it was about exposing the very enemies that are still trying to destroy the U.S."

This needs to be a thread, but I don't know how to do it.
