This is why they call it the "LIBERAL" media.

They are interjecting this into a Gang-Rape case where 20 year olds are looking at sentences of 16-20 years. Find me a sympathetic story about Duke where, at least, they are paying for their education.

Duke is a private college, doesn't seem like the author understands that.

U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E. Poor NCCU. Will they do an expose on St. Augustine, Shaw, or Winston Salem State next?

I am sure the article is BS. I remember NC Central, at least I think that was the school which had perhaps the World's best 440 relay team back in the 70's.

NCCU has a FANTASTIC JAZZ station which is webcast for free. (I get it via Itunes). Their morning listing is especially excellent.

But there is no free lunch - you have to ignore their politics. If you like jazz, it is well worth it!

I'm betting that you can find a poor struggling college within a few miles of Harvard or Yale. So what?

I don't really care about the fortunes or misfortunes of NCCU or Duke. I do care that lives are being ruined because of preconceived notions, lies and some kind of sense that the rich boys don't matter...

Thank goodness they have attorneys that can run rings around Nifong and the media..ATM receipts can't lie.

what struck me is that if NCC really wanted to change its image, shouldn't it be going for "diversity" and go after high achieving WHITE students?

I appreciate the feelings of posters who hold NCCU partially responsible for this mess.

I don't.

NCCU is full of bureaucrats and government grants, but there really isn't much else bad to say about this workingman's college. There are lots of hardworking kids and first-generation college types there. They have my admiration and approval for their effort and for keeping their eyes on the American Dream.

Duke is a bunch of out-of-state, out-of-touch, very smart faculty and student fast-trackers. The amazing thing about the school is the tiny impact this major institution can have on the state where it is housed. Good hospital, though--the best in the region.

Don't feel blame NCCU for its student's part-time job, and don't pity Duke in its typical elitism and self-absorption.

The university is aggressively recruiting top minority students — sometimes competing for them against Duke —

Maybe they should -- gasp -- think about admitting some top non-minority students.

North Carolina Central University does not have a lacrosse team.

Has NCCU ever had a demand for a lacrosse team? Blame Duke!

Students often cannot check out books from the main library, which is being renovated after a mold infestation.

Lack of funds or bad management? Blame Duke!

The business school is fighting to regain accreditation.

Lack of funds or bad management? Blame Duke!

Sixty percent of the students receive need-based financial aid.

Preached socialism from the pulpit, the classroom, the politician's podium. Blame Duke!

Eighty-one percent are black.

A large afro-centric curriculum. Blame Duke!

Only 28 percent graduate after four years.

Expecting miracles of scholarship from those ill-prepared for the course load. Blame Duke!

At least $121 million in state spending in the last six years has brought new law and science buildings and dormitories, and more projects are planned.

20 million a year and still no lacrosse team, a musty, dysfunctional library, decertified business program, massive financial aid, 81 % of one color, of which only 28% graduate. Blame Duke!

Nuff' said.

Gee...all this free PR from the NYT for having a 27 year old stripper with a criminal history enrolled at this college.

"North Carolina Central, a rambling red-brick, historically black institution, is across the tracks, across the highway, across an immeasurable cultural divide."

Well, maybe if they quit clutching on their precious "historically black institution" self image and became a plain ol' university seeking students without consideration of race there wouldn't be such a divide.

NCCU is a tribute to the racism that exists in the Black community. It should be gone but is kept as a racist training camp.

unbelievable. Maybe NCCU should charge $20,000 per semester and they would get free ipods. Did the NYT point out that NCCU was a state supported school and Duke a private school?
