Though many people nowadays think of May 1st as the socialist holiday of Labour Day; in Britain it had a very different origin. I can remember before May 1st was a public holiday we used to do Maypole dancing at school on 1st May, yes we had a Maypole in the playground.

In certain places the traditions of May Day are still celebrated with May Queens, Maypole Dancing, Sweep's Festival and Morris Dancing.
