John Mccain "I'd rather have clean government than the 1st amendment"
RedState ^

Posted on 04/29/2006 8:04:53 PM PDT by SDGOP

"He [Michael Graham] also mentioned my abridgement of First Amendment rights, i.e. talking about campaign finance reform....I know that money corrupts....I would rather have a clean government than one where quote First Amendment rights are being respected, that has become corrupt. If I had my choice, I'd rather have the clean government."

Give the guy a break. His statement refers to those who abuse the first amendment.

He said this a couple years back: “We called free speech ‘soft money’,” said McCain, “and then we banned free speech. We called self-defense ‘assault’, and then we banned that too.”

Special interests can put out all kinds of garbage- basically lies - and this is supposed to be protected speech? Not so!

I really thought he'd have a howard dean moment, and he still might.

Quite probable. He has a quick temper and can be nasty. Let's hope this does him in for the primaries

[Gee, isn't government suppose to be clean anyway]

That is the expectation, now it is the exception!

I disagree with all three of your points.

Free Americans should be able to give as much money as they want to any political candidate they want.

The only thing necessary in the way of 'restriction' is public reporting...so that the American people can judge for themselves "who is 'bought' by whom".

It's amazing to me that McCain doesn't even attempt to try to pretend to do what's electable, or palatable, or even, hey! for a novelty, constitutional.

It is a Rudy and Mitt deal, unless someone else gains traction to add to the mix. I really don't see anyone.

Neither of them are strong enough on the 2nd amendment to get the nod.

3rd Party. Go ahead and start thinking this concept...its going to happen. McCain is doing everything possible to make Republican voters unhappy. Based on what Dean did last time...using the internet...could happen. It'd be a hopeless situation dealing with congress...but worse things could be possible (a Hillery presidency for instance).

If McCain weren't in the government, we could have both.

"Was the Gipper "too freaking old" as well?"

No, but he made more sense when in the last stage of alzheimer than McGoo is making right now.

Ya, he probably was. But electing a septuagenarian for a first term, is a bit different than reelecting one, with an awesome record of success, as Reagan had in his first term, which sealed his legacy as a top tier president, even among many liberal historians, however much they hate that. Plus Reagan had as his opponent, for his second term, Mondale. You member him don't you? What did he have to really offer, to enhance the public square, and the American experiment? Buying off 50% plus one of special interests who want subsidies does not a shining hill make.

There is a way that we can clean up our Government once and for all.

Term limits is the only way. 12 years in Congress, tops. Some of these guys have been in office longer than I have been breathing. If they haven't gotten done whatever they got elected to do by now, they are failures and need to move on.

Governor Mitt Romney has signed into law a permanent assault weapons ban that he says will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on these guns.

And let us not forget he was for the federal ban too.
