Beyond the speeches, rallies and marches, the expected flood of immigrant activism Monday will be felt by many Northern San Joaquin Valley businesses.
Owners of businesses that employ many Latinos said they expect at least some of those workers to skip their jobs Monday affecting operations.
"It's going to be creating a lot of problems for everyone," said Manuel Tovar, owner of Tovar Landscape Maintenance in Ceres. He said he expects three of his five employees to miss work Monday, although he's got work appointments to keep.
Owners and managers of local dairies and chicken processing plants are expecting a similar labor shortage.
Tim Walsh, senior vice president for human resources at Foster Farms in Livingston, said what's hard is guessing how many workers will be absent.
"For those that don't show up, we'll work around them as best as we can," said Walsh, adding that he did not expect a large-scale walkout.
Walsh said Foster Farms emphasized to employees the company's support for a guest worker program and comprehensive immigration reform.
That topic, and the U.S. House of Representatives' passage in December of a bill with strong penalties for illegal immigrants, spurred immigrant activists to call for Monday's economic boycott and related events.
Foster Farms will consider such employees absent from work if they don't give prior notice, Walsh said.
State law allows workers attending boycott events to face discipline from their employers, up to and including termination, according to the California Department of Industrial Relations.
"It's just like any other unexcused absence," said department spokesman Dean Fryer. He said employees have more safeguards if they're disciplined specifically for attending a political event, rather than for simply missing work.

What's also sickening is how Americans are making excuses for this behavior. All the way to the POTUS, they're limp wristing the whole affair, as if to carry more guilt for all the world's ills.
Hey ICE are you there? Look at all the illegal employer names, hey IRS are you there? there are names for you to get back taxes from!
Any other 3 letter agency this is a May 1 takeover of this country go do your job!
I would assume that if they didn't hire illegals, they wouldn't have a "bottom line" problem.
Should have told every employee on Friday that Monday morning "no-shows" would be immediately terminated. If you don't, what will happen when they pull this once a month, really trying to put the squeeze on us?
What they ought ot do is psread the word - out that day, when back you get a pink slip, back wages and escorted to the border and dumped in Mexico.
Good. I hope your businesses suffer because you bent over to appease to Hispanic's demands.
That's what you get when you try to circumvent labor and supply-and-demand laws.
CONGRESS makes the laws, NOT the President. Write to your congresscritters.
We already have some great laws on the books. Enforcing them is another matter.
If you hire illegals, you are a criminal yourself
Our neighbors have a landscaping business, and they hire illegals. I find it difficult to be friendly with them, these days.
And the employer's of their cheap illegal criminal labor, throw up the white flag and surrender to the almighty dollar. There must be some way to bring these employers to task.
Don't, show your utmost disdain and contempt for them.
If a company closes Monday because their "workforce" is out marching, they need not expect me to buy from them in the future.
DC doesn't care about how Americans feel about these illegals whatsoever. WE'RE BEING SOLD OUT...
Yes, check out all illegal employers! It is criminal to have Mexicans coming over and protesting the American government and it's laws. Send them all back, for we do not need this.
Will there be a list of businesses that had to close down because the majority of their employees marched against our immigration laws? It would be a great public service if someone could compile such a list.

Yeah, but will they?
Keep letting your congressman, Senators and the RNC and the Whitehouse know of your disatisfaction with how this ILLEGAL ALIEN SITUATION IS PROGRESSING!
It may seem futile but each day, I send emails to each of these entities & express my disatisfaction with the actions dealing with illegal aliens!
