WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congressional Research Service reports it costs an average of $361,000 to put a soldier, Marine, airman or sailor in Iraq or in the region.
Costs have risen almost 20 percent in 2006, making it likely the expense per service member has topped $400,000, the Houston Chronicle reported.
World War II, in which the United States deployed 75 times as many troops as in Iraq, cost the nation about $20,400 per soldier, adjusted for inflation, researchers said.

But .. they're worth a MILLION each - for their courage, honor, integrity, loyalty, etc., etc.
Actually, they're PRICELESS to this nation - God bless them all.

Cost? Seems to me American soldiers don't cost at all in a monetary way. They save and purchase. They save my freedoms and purchase it with their blood. There are no meaningful costs other than what they sacrifice.

Ok then, while we're at it, can somebody please compute the cost of each life lost on 9/11 after you take into consideration the cost of each life, the jobs lost, the twin towers, the pentagon, the 4 jetliners, the compensation to families, the loss of business in the following years, the cost of tourism lost, the loss of business in the airline industry, the government handouts to the airlines, the government compensation to the victims' families, the cost of cleanup, the cost of rebuilding, etc.?

Imagine the cost if we didn't have 'em. The MSM certainly wouldn't have the freedom to report it because they wouldn't exist.

Actually, they're PRICELESS to this nation - God bless them all. Well said. So true.
These morons who whine about things like this need to see what it's like in countries that do not have freedom. It's an eye-opener.
I got to see a country that didn't have freedom for a long time gain theirs and it was one of the most exciting and emotional things I have ever seen in my life.
I will never, ever take the freedom I was born into for granted after seeing that.

Using cutting edge technology is expensive but it increases worker productivity. An American soldier is 160 times more productive than non-American soldiers based on the product count laying on the ground. As robotics take over the battlefield, costs per soldier will continue to rise but the number of American deaths will keep falling.
We sacked a country of 26 million highly armed people with about 150,000 troops. That's got to be some kind of military record.

Theres a good point in this, in that there are likely to be some big inefficiencies in the deployment of US forces.
Its not all because of high capital costs for high tech either, these are mostly within the regular budget.
Its not really personnel costs, as these are also mostly regularly budgeted.
If these excess costs can be worked out it would increase US power by making power projection cheaper.
