False rumors of random federal immigration raids have sent panic through immigrant communities around the country this week, emptying classrooms, work sites and shopping areas and sending thousands of people into hiding.
Towns in New Jersey and on Long Island have been among those most affected by the snowballing fear, say immigrant advocates and public officials, who described terrified mothers pulling their children from a Head Start program in Freehold, N.J., and deserted streets in usually bustling areas of West Hempstead, N.Y.

Yeh I am sure they are panicked all right is that why they will march as militants across this great land of OURS threatening America with shutting it down out in the open on May 1 and allowed to disrespect the U.S.A.?
Ping! Your rumors are working! ;)
They're coming out in hundreds of thousands. That must be because they're all running away in panic.
An expatriation plan that works??
Well Well...
And this is a bad thing?
False rumors of random federal immigration raids have sent panic through immigrant communities around the country this week, emptying classrooms, work sites and shopping areas
Too bad the rumors are not true
Well, I heard ICE is going to be sending empty busses and thousands of agents to the rallies-- a very efficient way to deport thousands with minimal effort.
Terrified of what, losing their heads?
who described terrified mothers pulling their children from a Head Start program in Freehold, N.J.
"mothers pulling their children from a Head Start program in Freehold, N.J"
Our tax dollars at work! If these people are illegal, why are their children allowed in the Head Start program?
I'm glad they're panicked! I just hope the rumors are true!
Cheryl Little, executive director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center in Miami, is still looking into rumors. "The community is paralyzed," she said. "I haven't seen this kind of fear in the immigrant community ever.
Immigrants are afraid of going to work, of taking their kids to school, of leaving the home. People are not going to important medical appointments. There are pregnant women canceling their prenatal care appointments because they feel immigration will be waiting for them there.
"Some immigrant advocates see an eerie reversal of the groundswell that emboldened tens of thousands to take to the streets in protest last month, and a frightening glimpse of the future if Congress enacts pending measures that would require the local police to enforce federal immigration law and add criminal penalties to what are now civil violations.
Oh if that were but true.
This is an interesting article. Something does seem different for the farm who owns several hundred acres of apple and peach orchards across the road. I'm seeing more of cars driving in *very* early and leaving *very* late. I think folks are spooked in this area.
If streets of bustling towns become empty when illegal immigrants think they might get caught, you do the math.
How can this be? The nation didn't shut down? I thought if illegals wern't at work in this country, the country would stop.
Yesterday AM at work a decidedly non-Anglo looking fellow walked into our building's service entrance (he was a grounds care guy) with a big stop sign hanging over his chest. It read something like "Don't Snitch." At first I thought that this was a rallying cry for illegals but on second thought I believe it has to do with not giving evidence regarding gang crimes. Either way it relates to the same problem - ILLEGALS.
Awwwwww....
Who'd be spreading such rumors?
Maybe it isn't rumor. Hmmmmm.......
ICE has been 'active', rounding up, checking some employers.
Hmmmmm.....
