GOP OHIO BLUES
Ohio Republican insiders are sadly predicting the primary election victory Tuesday of Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, an iconoclastic supply-sider, but mourn that his nomination will lead to the state's first Democratic governor in 16 years.
Blackwell is a clear favorite to defeat state Attorney General Jim Petro, the choice of party regulars. They claim Blackwell's outspoken support for budget cuts and tax cuts will cost him against Rep. Ted Strickland, the probable Democratic nominee who is an experienced candidate.
Although Blackwell's Republican critics do not say so out loud, they appear to fear he will lose more votes than he gains as an African-American. However, Blackwell could be a surprise winner if he cuts into the overwhelmingly Democratic black vote.

The African-American vote will go Democratic. The most hateful speech will be perpretated by Jesse Jackson et al. They will be ridiculing Blackwell on every African-American radio show. Throwing Oreo cookies at him (this already happened to Lt. Gov. Steele in Maryland.)
Look at the early polling from Pennsylvania where Swann is running for Governor...

Democratic incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell leads Republican challenger Lynn Swann, the former Pittsburgh Steeler, 47 - 37 percent in his race for reelection, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. This is virtually unchanged from the results of a February 15 poll.
A separate sample of black registered voters showed Rendell ahead of Swann 74 - 12 percent with 12 percent undecided.
I think it's spelled boozers.
Even if people disagree with someones positions, they may vote for him because he has the backbone and the leadership to stand up for what he believes him. Remember Reagan, he got liberal Democrats to vote for him, I mean, he carried Massachussets. So just being a principled conservatives doesn't equal less votes.
Wrong moronic RINOs those are two winning issues that once people become aware of them will boost Blackwell.
That's Ohio, RINO central! Blackwell can beat Strickland!
the problem with the republican party is the rino leadership. they make me sick.Blackwell is the guy!
I don't know why this is, but in SIX YEARS, he has never written ANYTHING positive about the GOP, either in terms of predictions for electoral gain, or in terms of things Bush/GOP are doing right. Some say---I can't prove this---that he predicted GOP wins in 2002 and 2004. Big deal. I did too, and I guarantee I was closer in my predictions than he was.
There is something not right with this guy, and I don't know if the Bushies/GOP has cut him out of their tidbits loop or what, but I don't trust his assessments on ANYTHING.
I live in OH, and I just did canvassing for Blackwell among Republicans this week, again, in a key precinct of a key county (Montgomery).
Out of the people I contacted---who are registered Republicans---I found perhaps 15% anti-Blackwell (didn't bother to see if they were anti-Petro, too), about 25% strong pro-Blackwell, and all the rest, as you might expect, hadn't even thought about the primary, but of those who were voting, I got "good vibes" (Yeah, I'll think about voting for him) from more than 75% of those remaining.
Why is my little mini-experiment suggestive?
1) Remember that, as Jay Cost showed us, OHIO IS REPUBLICAN. We don't need "crossover" or "independent" voters if we just turn out Republicans in the fall!!!
2) There is NO . . . I repeat, NO substantial anti-Taft backlash associated with Blackwell. (Again, don't know about Petro).
3) Ergo, if this is the case, Blackwell WILL get the GOP votes in the fall, and he will win, "period, dot."
Let's hear it for the Rino Republican leadership (?) that gave us Taft, DeWine and the blubbering Voinovich.Go go go Blackwell show Ohio what a real Republican is like.
The reason that the Democrats AND Republican establishment in OH are working so hard to defeat Blackwell is the exact opposite of what the profess. They know if Blackwell wins the primary, he most likely skates through the general to the governorship. Their fear is that their tax-funded gravy train will be over, especially if his TEL amendment also passes.
If both he and TEL win in Nov., the OH Democrat Party is all but broken. Blackwell's grand plan, apart from winning, is to kill the OH Democrat Party (figuratively) and render the OH RINO party establishment irrelevant. Both of these groups are fighting for their political lives. His campaign has been completely grass roots, with little party, state legislator, or media support; yet he is steamrolling to victory. It is so bad that Petro and both Democrat AND Republican groups and legislators are encouraging Democrats to register as Republicans to vote against Blackwell. Petro is not even pretending to be a Republican anymore.
Blackwell is running a scorched-earth, take-no-prisoners campaign. It's a beautiful sight to behold. Expect to hear more about Ohio from now 'til Nov. than you ever wanted to know; all because of Ken Blackwell. Imagine if Rush Limbaugh was running for governor.
Sit back and enjoy the show, but I'm sure financial support for the entertainment will be welcome.
This is a sign that the Ohio bosses are way out of touch. I don't know if Blackwell will win, but he has a much better chance than any Taft ally would.
