As state senators threw their support behind next week's massive boycott planned in support of immigrant rights, the state's top education official warned school districts Thursday not to expect financial compensation if students miss class to protest. By a 24-13 party-line vote, the state Senate approved a resolution that calls the one-day protest the Great American Boycott 2006 and describes it as an attempt to educate Americans "about the tremendous contribution immigrants make on a daily basis to our society and economy."
"One day doesn't sound like a lot, but imagine one day of Latinos not spending a dime," said state Sen. Nell Soto, D-Ontario. "I don't support a negative business impact. But if it takes that, the people boycotting one day, maybe that will send a message."
State Sen. George Runner, R-Lancaster, criticized the resolution for supporting a movement he believes could hurt the state's economy and calls for amnesty for illegal immigrants.
"The resolution itself was a disingenuous effort," Runner said in a statement. "No one denies the contribution of immigrants. The issue is clear responsibility to come into this country lawfully."
The boycott, also called "A Day Without Immigrants," grew out of huge pro-immigrant marches across the United States in recent weeks. Organizers are urging people to stay home from school and jobs and avoid spending money on Monday to demonstrate their importance to the U.S. economy.
Jack O'Connell, state superintendent of public instruction, said Thursday he would not approve waivers for districts that ask to be reimbursed for students who are not in school on Monday because of immigration protests.

California does it again on border security. Eternal Vigilance, ping away!
Boycott Cal-lefty-fornia
Is this secession? Can we send in the Grand Army of the Republic?
"California] State Senate endorses boycott"
NO, California State Senate is endorsing lawlessness, and they need to be called on it.
"...the state Senate approved a resolution that calls the one-day protest the Great American Boycott 2006 and describes it as an attempt to educate Americans "about the tremendous contribution immigrants make on a daily basis to our society and economy."
Note that nasty word "illegal" is missing from the statement.
"[California] State Senate endorses boycott"
I can't believe that the elected leaders would endorse a plan to hurt their own people. This boycott is being organized to shutdown our largest cities, and cause as much economic damage as possible.
We have fools running this state.
I'll be permanently boycotting all Cal business's that support this activity. Too bad! I love mexican food.
I'm already doing that. I've turned downed two temporary work assignments in California, telling my boss why. I won't even drive through the Peoples Rupulik on my way to Arizona.
We've had fools running this state for a long time. It's business as usual for them. They do not represent the people.
I just sent an e-mail to my "representative," D. Jones (Communist), expressing my outrage with this. It won't make any difference, but I felt better.
That's a pretty ignorant attitude to take. This was the position of 24 people out of 35 million. To pass a law in California you need a majority of both houses of the legislature and the signature of the governor. The legislature has 120 members, and they could only come up with 24 to support this. That's why they did it as a resolution in the more liberal body, the Senate. It is a statement and nothing else. It is meaningless and again it's the views of 24 leftists.
Meanwhile the vast majority of Californians are average people working at their jobs, raising their kids and contributing a substantial portion of Americas gross national product. If you are going to boycott Californian, you are going to need to eat a whole lot less, log off FreeRepublic and get rid of your computer.
How about if we all get together and fight off the liberals all over the US? That would be more productive.
"How about if we all get together and fight off the liberals all over the US? That would be more productive."
Yes, GMTA. I suggest we start here in CA--the most populous and wealthy state for a lot of reasons!
Actually, from Washington State. Used to buzz down I-5 to L.A. then I-10 to Phoenix. Now I go through Boise, ID, down 93 to Vegas, then thru Lake Havasu on down to I-10 before hanging a left for Phoenix. Takes a little longer but a stop to play in Vegas offsets that will a little fun.
