Julia Thorne, an author, activist, and former wife of US Senator John F. Kerry, died yesterday in Concord. She was 61.
The cause of death was transitional-cell carcinoma, a form of cancer, according to her daughter Vanessa Kerry.
In a telephone interview, John Kerry called Ms. Thorne "a great friend to a lot of people" and spoke with emotion of her accomplishments as a parent. "She was the best mom two daughters could want," he said. "She was completely committed to the kids and their future."
Her daughter echoed that view.
"She was a phenomenal mother," said Vanessa Kerry, of Cambridge. "And she affected many others, too. So many people have come up to me over the years, even on the campaign trail, to say how much of a difference her books made for them. People basked in her embrace of life."

Youve got to admire a fellow who sees a room full of wealthy widows as a target-rich environment. --- Annie Coulter
Why does "Hanoi John" look like he's been sucking on big dill pickles all of his life? If he didn't, he should be! Ahhh jeez, I forgot, he's got a lifetime supply of free pickles!
He's had a lifetime of free everything. First he leeched on his friends and then he married the money - twice!
Nothing strange about it at all. Upper-class Bostonian inbreeding. There is a branch of my family like that (tho not rich by any means.) Long-faced, toothy, lantern-jawed. And doomed by the Roe effect.
No question about it. For being a scummy person, "Hanoi John" has had the same luck as Ted Kennedy too. There's no hole they can't fit into, or if stuck, get out of!
Funny isn't it, how those Upper-class Bostonians probably look down on some of the rest of us and don't realize how silly they are.
The Church doesn't make the Sacrament invalid. It is the nature of the two parties involved for any number of reasons. The more popular one in the last 30 years in the US has been the 'not psychologically prepared to make this commitment', which I believe the Vatican might be slowing down acceptance of pretty soon. Others could be a previous marriage that was not admitted to, or anulled, a condition hidden from one of the parties that was later discovered; drug abuse, alcoholism, mental illness, where knowledge might have given the other party pause before making the commitment, inability or unwillingness to stay faithful to the vows.
As far as what happens if one of the parties doesn not want it annulled, I can't tell you. At that point, the divorce is final, so I don't know why the person would object to the annulment, unless they've been told, incorrectly, that it would affect the legitimacy of the kids. If the Sacrament is considered invalid because of the nature of one of the parties, it is invalid for BOTH parties, not just for the one about whom the judgement was made.
The only newlyweds I know of who went to the Paris Peace talks on their honeymoon--and negotiated with the commies.
Fun, fun, fun!!
There's a Servicemaster radio commercial for their fire damage restoration work using their slogan "Like it never really happened"--which may be applied to this perverse purchase of papal dispensation in lieu of divorce, annulment. Like the rest of Kerry, it shows him to be a liar, a traitor, a betrayer, in short, the lowest form of life on two legs. That Julia could endure him, go through that betrayal and depression, yet be so stoned Stockholm as to endorse him is testament to her failure this time around. May karma and samsara be kinder to her the next for her senseless suffering. But for you, John, such a pain, say, gout, or angina pectoris, you freak.
RIP, you definitely should have a place in heaven after what you've been through.
Did anyone see Kerry comment on her death?
Being Catholic, the 'purchase' of annulments by the rich has always been a thorn in my side.
I have an Aunt who divorced, was refused an annulment, remarried and could never receive the Sacraments of the church because of it.
I "think" Teddy may have received or tried to receive an annulment from Joan too??
I posted this article from the Bozeman Daily Chronical (can't find it in the archives) before the election. I never saw anything in the major network news about it.
Kerry's former wife seeks privacy
From the url it appears that it was published 2/15/04, but if you click on it, it gives today's date.
"Thorne, however, started treatments for cancer on Nov. 3 [must have been Nov 2003] at an out-of-state facility, Catton said." "She has several months of recovery ahead of her," he said. "This challenge is her sole focus now. It is the focus of her husband, her daughters, her friends."
May she rest in peace.
