WASHINGTON -- The End. The post-Watergate era of independent counsels, the investigators whose criminal probes affected the fortunes of Republican and Democratic administrations alike, is officially coming to a close.
A two-paragraph order signed by a federal appeals court clerk on March 31 marks the demise of the last of the court-appointed prosecutors.
Independent counsel David Barrett, who spent a decade and $20 million investigating former Housing Secretary Henry Cisneros, must complete his duties "on or before May 3," the order states.
Cisneros pleaded guilty in 1999 to a misdemeanor of lying to the FBI about payments to a former mistress when he was answering questions following his nomination for the Cabinet-level post. But Barrett kept investigating, contending in a final report in January that the Justice Department and IRS blocked his efforts to probe possible Cisneros tax violations.

Humour us and release the unredacted Barret Report!
Barrett Report ping.
Bump!
Maybe some Senator will leak it.
John Kerry maybe...
A 20 Million dollar report the Senate won't let the public see in full
An entire herd of Rino's couldn't release the unredacted Barret Report. We're supposed to forget about it, open the borders, and bend over for whatever else mama guv'mint wants us to do - and always, boys & girls, always vote Republican.
Gee .. thanks for mentioning the borders
This is a plot by the White House because Tony Snow was all over this to be released!!! RELEASE IT PRESIDENT BUSH!!
Beat me!!
I thought it was already complete...and WE are just waiting on it's release....
The Senate is blocking out large portions of the report
Kerry wanted to bury the whole thing
I'm wondering what they are afraid of the public seeing by hiding parts of the report
RELEASE THE ENTIRE BARRETT REPORT!!!
What are the odds Tony can do something about getting this report released in its entirety? One can only hope.
That would be nice. Maybe he could at least find out what the real deal is.
Why isn't this report covered under the "Freedom of Information Act" that seems to cover every little tidbit of information concerning the president's...down to our... private lives? I say we demand it under that law.
There shouldn't be any secrets left from the Clinton era, but those folks seem to be able to have that priviledge where others aren't afforded the same!
Since Tony is gone do we have an advocate that can demand this be done? I regret that he didn't have the time to get this done before joining the administration.
Here is my thought on the matter. Tony was nearly alone in calling for the release of the Barrett Report. He is now subject [within reason] to toeing the line of the Administration. GWB has consistently shown he prefers a Christian "turn the other cheek" approach to sin and sinners, including political ones. So I think we have lost Tony in this battle, although I would guess that behind the scenes he is counseling release of the report. But, unfortunately, the President does have the final say.
The next time I vote for a committed Christian, I am going to make sure he is a "Crusader" first.
Leak the entire report and blame it on Daniel Elsberg!
Or John Kerry. Or WaPo Editor.
Didn't they say the public has a RIGHT TO KNOW?
If it serves the PUBLIC GOOD, then it is FREE SPEECH!
I read that somewhere!
