NBC anchorman emeritus Tom Brokaw has taken the network's obstreperous White House correspondent David Gregory to the woodshed, warning him not to let his relationship with brand new White House press secretary Tony Snow devolve into a foodfight.
"David and I have actually talked about this," Brokaw told radio host Don Imus on Thursday.
"I would succumb to this from time-to-time," the veteran newsman recalled. "You get into that bubble in the White House press corps and you begin to think that it's between you personally and the press secretary. Or that you're showing off for your colleagues in the room."
Gregory's exchanges with departing White House press secretary Scott McClellan often deteriorated into shouting matches. During the Dick Cheney hunting accident imbroglio, Gregory accused McClellan of being "a jerk to me personally."
Still responding to Imus' question about the volatile reporter, Brokaw indicated that he thought Gregory had crossed the line.
"That's not the function of the White House press corps. The function of the White House press corps is to represent the country and ask the questions that they deserve to have asked and to get answers for them. And not to make it some kind of a personal exchange."
Apparently sensing that he'd gone too far in making his reprimand of Gregory public, Brokaw then turned on dime, telling Imus:
"David is clearly the best correspondent down there. He is constantly learning and taking the temperature of the place. He's got great insights. I think the world of him. And we're very, very fortunate to have him."
Gregory is going to find out really soon that Tony Snow can run circles around him!
I guess Brokaw thinks that Gregory would lose a food fight with Tony Snow.
So do I. Dang. He doesn't even look good going up against McClellan.
I just lost my breakfast - no , wait!
He just MIGHT BE the best. Which isn't saying a lot for the rest of them -
That's true, BUT, as Rush said yesterday..
A dog is a dog..
and a snake is a snake..
and an a$$h*le is an A$$h*le (that lie is mine)
Gregory Clymer will not be able to control himself. It's just a matter of time.
Tony's going to be mentally fencing with an unarmed opponent.
Another reason to END the coverage of the total WH press briefing for these shecocks to primp in front of US.
eeek..that LINE is mine
Please let me know if & when this actually happens.
So maybe David Gregory should stop engaging in non-productive activities.
Easier to get a blue jay to shut up.
So he finally admits he was a partisan hack.
thanks for the post. I can't wait for this. Can someone tell me when the first presser is, with Tony Snow? I got my cspan.
Nawww....it's great theatre watching Gregory pander and drool. I just get the biggest kick out this guy making an @** out of himself coast-to-coast.
I always get an impression he's auditioning for something.
Even I like a bellylaugh and Gregory is guaranteed every time. You'd think the guy was hoped up on Pezz.... or something..
2 weeks as I understand it. I'm waiting too...
Tony Snow will not take any of David Gregory's sh**, and will put him and folks like ugly Helen in their appropriate place....outside the press room...if they dare misbehave as they are wont to do. He needs to do this from the start, and then stay with it. I don't care if the press asks their dumb questions, but I do care when they show disrespect to the press officer and the President while at the White House.
When, do you suppose, it is that the WH presstitutes AREN'T showing off for each other?? Honestly, it IS always about them, isn't it/
anyone waiting for the broadcast where Snow walks out abruptly to the microphone and says "The disarming of Iran has begun..." without taking further questions?
I believe David's father is/was a playwright (sp?)
Conservatives actually get it. They can think very clearly. This trumps the leftys every time. Tony Snow is about as good as it gets. Can't wait to watch the pressers.
