President Bush generally favors plans to give millions of illegal immigrants a chance at U.S. citizenship without leaving the country, but does not want to be more publicly supportive because of opposition among conservative House Republicans, according to senators who attended a recent White House meeting.
Several officials familiar with the meeting also said Democrats protested radio commercials that blamed them for Republican-written legislation that passed the House and would make illegal immigrants vulnerable to felony charges.
Bush said he was unfamiliar with the ads, which were financed by the Republican National Committee, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
At another point, Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and other members of his party pressed the president about their concern that any Senate-passed bill would be made unpalatable in final talks with the House.
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat, said the lawmaker who would lead House negotiators, House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, had been "intractable" in negotiations on other high-profile bills in the past. Bush did not directly respond to the remark, officials said.
The Republican and Democratic officials who described the conversation did so Wednesday on condition of anonymity, saying they had not been authorized to disclose details.
Bush convened the session to give momentum to the drive for election-year immigration legislation, a contentious issue that has triggered large street demonstrations and produced divisions in both political parties. Senators of both parties emerged from the session praising the president's involvement and said the timetable was achievable.
"Yes, he thinks people should be given a path to citizenship," said Sen. Mel Martinez., R-Fla., a leading supporter of immigration legislation in the Senate.

Your use of the word Xenophobia alone tells me you must be a friend of Dane.
37 million between 1880-1920.....1.08 million per year into a nation still being settled between it's two coasts by folks looking to assimilate as they have and none of them coming here saying we took aomething from them or that we owe them something.
Upwards of 25-30 million just between 1986 and now. 1.5 million per year average and some claim that we may now be seeing nearly 3 million per year.
"When a hundred or so immigrants on the Mayflower hit the beach, they set the culture of the continent."....sort of a snotty comment about Native Americans don't you think?
As if you like any other FROBL operative cares....I would like to kick out most illegals as possible, secure the borders and set discretionary legal immigration more in line with what we had between Teddy Roosevelt's era and when Teddy Kennedy and the Senate Dems screwed the pooch in 65?
So which do you prefer of the Teddy's?
Racist Xenophone Roosevelt?
or Open Borders for likely to vote Dem illegals Kennedy?
"Xenophobia since 1960"...huh?
Have you heard of Hart-Cellar Act of 1965.
That is when all this crap started.
I hate when FReepers use PC codewords.
Alien Nation: (just what you'd like I'll bet for your own personal reasons hidden by highminded naivete.
From the researchers at the Los Angeles Times (not some right wing Nationalist site):
40 percent of all workers in L.A. County are working for cash and not paying taxes.
95 percent of all arrest warrants issued for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
75 percent of people on L.A.'s most-wanted list are illegal aliens.
Over two-thirds of all births are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by the taxpayers.
Nearly 25 percent of all inmates in California detention centers are here illegally.
Over 300,000 illegals are living in garages.
The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegals from south of the border.
Nearly 60 percent of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
Of the 10 million people in Los Angeles County, 5.1 million speak English and 3.9 million speak Spanish.
21 radio stations in Los Angeles are Spanish speaking.
Less than 2 percent of illegals are picking crops but 29 percent are on welfare.
Over 70 percent of the U.S. annual population growth (over 90 percent of California, Florida and New York) are from immigration.
29 percent of inmates in the federal prisons are illegal aliens.
The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes minus services used) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a negative.
They also send about $15 billion back to Mexico annually.
It cost Los Angeles $276 million in welfare costs for 100,000 children of illegal aliens.
Ethnic....like so many of the FROBLs here.
Their goal: Mexican culture preeminent north of the Rio Grande .
They just cloak with platitudes.
Some FROBLs also insist on unlimited Muslim immigration.
Now those are the real moonbats.
We had more open immigration more directed at third world quotas AFTER 1960 than before?
Where do these grudge holders get their info?
Suspicions confirmed.
"Their goal: Mexican culture preeminent north of the Rio Grande."
It's always good to have goals. That way it's easier to tell how far short you fell when you fail.
And it will be a painful failure in attempting to achieve that goal.
From what I've seen, the FROBLs aren't real particular when it comes to information sources. Just so it's adequate to keep feeding the pro-illegal alien spin.
"Ethnic....like so many of the FROBLs here."So I see. Nice exchanges and retrieval of information assumed now confirmed.Suspicions confirmed.
"Their goal: Mexican culture preeminent north of the Rio Grande."
Reward their behavior? Do you have any idea what size the deluge would be if we did that without sufficient barriers in place? Half of (who's remaining) in Mexico would be here as well as massive increases from Central and South America.
And you didn't read what the other posters have been trying to tell you: most of them don't WANT to conform and purposely hole up in enclaves where English usage is frowned upon. Unlike previous generations of immigrants (for the purpose of this explanation - invaders aren't immigrants) the majority of illegals arrogantly continue their self-exclusion because the pinhead "politically correct" ideals that have pervaded our educational institutions has made the general populace and their representatives afraid to enforce plainly written laws...for the fear of being labeled as insensitive racists.
If you belong to that cadre of lilly-livered suck-ups why are you even posting here? If you don't like the law write your legislators and stop pestering conservatives who know better. Nobody's buying "Am-nesty-Way" today.
There is no fate but one fate for them and Dhimmitude is it's name. Dakka dakka dakka! (see "Team America-World Police".)
Let me guess, closet ACLU?
Bumping the thread to find it later...
And lay off the ayahuasca...that stuff rusts out your synapses.
LOL
I have a practical PHD in psilocibin and lysergic acid-25 myself
though my "dissertation" is a bit dated..lol..and only real men ate Mississippi shrooms in the field
back when micograms were counted in 1000s
Timothy Leary's Dead....ohhhhh, he's outside looking in..
and you can personally attest that I am not fried at all right?
(don't answer that)
Doctor Tim was wrong because most people can't handle it.
But I know you're messing with me because I'm the proverbial Boy Scout. I'll turn the other cheek but I won't hold onto your pocket.
Leary was in it for the same stuff Fred Durst was..lol
I ran into Durst's former bodyguard, known as Tyson Tomko in the WWE. We pretty much agreed that Fred is a spoiled punk from a privileged Tennesee family with no grounding in reality. Korn's a far better band than Limp Bizkit, anyway...far more rock than (c)rap.
But I acknowlege that "My Way or the Highway" was a good tune.
I'll take number three until/unless we need four and five.
Well, duh. Did you think I was some kind of liberal, or what?
Assimilation is great; but the problem we are facing is an apparent refusal by the invading hordes to integrate into our culture.
No one will take such trouble unless they're pushed. I spent a couple of years in Germany in the Air Force, but I didn't "assimilate" whatever, because I had Armed forces radio, TV, places to eat, everything. I tried to learn German, but didn't learn more than a few words.
That was in the 70's, but I came closer to "assimilation" just recently when I spent just one week there. I picked up a German language CD, and spent the whole week commuting by German "U"bahn, and living in a German hotel with no American with me at all.
History demonstrates than when the price of being here is assimilation, then people assimilate. Rather than waste time on a pipe dream that some political entity can be pursuaded to remove these folks, we need to return to what's already proved workable in the not too distant past.
If they were immigrating in much lower numbers, assimilation might be possible, but not with the millions flooding into the states that we have now.
Raw numbers are irrelevant. If you have 10 people and all of them are Mexican, then they'll stay Mexican. If 1 out of 20 are Mexican, they *can* be assimilated, and that's about the percentage we've got.
The percentages of foreign born, and native foreign language speakers was greater in this country when my grandmother was born. We survived, and thrived then, we can do so again if we do it right.
I'm not "pro-illegal". I'm pro-American. Real live English speaking Constitution respecting American.
You and I merely disagree on how to bring that about.
I say that trying harder at the same failed policy of the last 40 years is stupid. The assimilation policy of 100 years ago worked well, on a larger percentage of foreign born than we have now.
Conservatives are all for "original intent". But the "original intent" of the people that formed this country was to be a welcome space for all the freedom loving hard working people of the world.
You would have them erase the words etched on the Statue of Liberty.
one might wonder whether your particular interest here is economic and/or ethnic.
I have zero economic or racial motivation here. I merely respect my German, Mediterranean and Anglo immigrant ancestors and believe that if immigrants today are given the same options of assimilate or go home, then things will work out OK. Giving them an ultimatum of just go home has been demonstrated to be a non-starter, and you'll notice that with decades of Americans complaining about mexicans here in the US, they're still here. It's time to return to what worked.
Back to the point - why should I give an inch to Indians so embarrassed by their backgrounds as to adhere to a fairy tale of "Aztlan"? They'd garner far more respect from the public if they just represented themselves as what they are.
