Bush, senators agree on alien citizenship, shut out critics (Washington Times)
The Washington Times ^ | April 26, 2006 | Stephen Dinan

President Bush and a group of senators yesterday reached general agreement on an immigration bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for many illegal aliens.

But left out of the closed-door White House meeting were senators who oppose a path to citizenship. The meeting even snubbed two men who had been considered allies of Mr. Bush on immigration -- Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican and chairman of the immigration subcommittee, and Sen. Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican.

Mr. Bush in brief remarks to the press said there was agreement to get "a bill that does not grant automatic amnesty to people, but a bill that says, somebody who is working here on a legal basis has the right to get in line to become a citizen." But senators, speaking afterward, said Mr. Bush was far more specific in the meeting.

"There was a pretty good consensus that what we have put into the Hagel-Martinez proposal here is the right way to go," said Sen. Mel Martinez, Florida Republican. "I think he was very clear [on] pathway to citizenship, so long as it goes to the back of the line, and he even opened the door here for something we've haggled back and forth on, that you can shrink the time for people to become citizens by simply enlarging the number of green cards."

And Sen. Sam Brownback, Kansas Republican, said Mr. Bush "endorsed the concept of an earned citizenship."

That would represent a substantial change on the part of the Bush administration, which just last year said it opposed a path to citizenship for those currently here illegally.

(snip)

Even as Mr. Bush is moving in that direction, the House majority leader yesterday rejected it.

This kind of rubbish in both Parties is best solved in the Primaries, i.e. by an active, effective Pro-American 'Sub-Party' certainly within the Republican camp and hopefully with a Pro-American counterpart amid the demorat field.

It's a pro-american sub-party that can field candidates and win nominations to represent either/both of the Parties in a working two-party system. TeamAmerica.com is a good start... who else? AmericanCause.com?

And what Governor(therefore qualified)should be the pro-american infra-party candidate for President in '08; and what House, Senate, and Gubernatorial candidates should be supported by a pro-american infra-party in these six months of '06 elections?

Exactly who will pay the medical for these poor people paid substandard wages? The taxpayers...we can barely afford the premiums for our own families. I am so ticked about this, I doubt I will bother to go to the polls-why bother.

We all thought Campaign Finance Reform would never become law, either.

"Foolish" hardly describes it. "Suicidal" is a better adjective. These guys are just dying to be in the minority next year, aren't they?

It is a little late to be lamenting the fact that Kyl-Cornyn gathered no political acceptance.

The far right had its chance to back that bill in 2005, but declined to. Instead, they chose to back deportation.

Hopefully his betrayal of Office and Country will be thwarted by more patriotic men in the House of Reps.

After the GOP loses both Houses of Congress this November, the RAT majority will draft articles of impeachment. I would hardly call the RATs patriotic, though.

Frankly, I'm not interested in anything written by Chuck Hagel. This has proven to be no exception.

I'm from Nebraska, and I would seriously love to read a letter of resignation from him.

i wonder if there is any chance to ask for a SCOTUS review of this on groumds that it penalizes legal applicants for citizenship and rewards illegals with a path to citizenship? --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Good Question. I've also wondered if there is a legal angle that someone could take on this. For Goodness sake, the President and Congress are taking a law THEY don't like and re-writing it AND AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE MAJORITY OF THE VOTERS !!! THIS*** IS*** INSANE*** !

Sadly, Chuck Hagel will not pay the price, because he's not up for reelection for another two years. I live in Nebraska, and I would crawl across broken glass to vote against him.

I wish I didn't. Scary, isn't it? We're being sold, right before our eyes, by the very people we worked so hard to elect. If this bill passes and is signed into law, you can see the end of the country in the rear view mirror.

I am now convinced that just before election day this November we will begin to hear the beginning trumpets of The Deguello.

Yeah, no kidding. This certainly isn't good. It firmly entrenches a pattern that encourages those wishing to have immigrant status to ignore all of our laws, rules, and to do their best to get here, legally or illegally, and if legally, simply overstay their visas.

So why bother having immigration laws as I see it. So hell, as long as we're "there," let's just get rid of all of our immigration laws since they don't mean anything.

After all, what the hell's the point!

Maybe the CONSERVATIVES should begin a movement to IMPEACH PRES. BUSH FOR NOT ENFORCING OUR LAWS ! That would be a first, wouldn't it... the President's own party asking for impeachment? I'm very very serious.

I am past that. It is time to invoke articles of secession (Virginia first, whose next? Georgia?.

Yeah, Razz, I got a couple of those myself this past week. Did exactly what you did; explaining in an accompaning letter that, although, I have sent you (RNC) "gifts" in the past, you can stick these in the proverbial "bodily orifice that does not let the sun shine in. And until we some conservative action up your way; you can take me off your mailing list."

This is absolute crap.

closed-door

That's how the fiasco Pill Bill (Medicare Prescription Drug) was written, too. It was only supposed to cost some $350 million. Then, as soon as it was passed, ooops, $540 million. Later analysts say it will be closer to $750 million.

somebody who is working here on a legal basis

If they are here illegally, over the border or expired visa, they are not here on a legal basis.

Even as Mr. Bush is moving in that direction, the House majority leader yesterday rejected it.

Representatives must have gotten an earful at home during the Congressional recess. Wonder how many of the Senators who attended the closed door chose to recess elsewhere than their home states, because they didn't want to get an earful?
