Bush said today that illegal aliens are only human beings who should be accorded "respect." He also said it would be impossible to deport millions of them.

He also said this, just in case there's still anyone left who doesn't know how much contempt he holds the American worker in:

"That's why I'm for a temporary worker program that will -- (applause) -- that says to a person, here is a tamper-proof card that says, you can come and do a job an American won't do, fill a need."

Is it really going to say that on the card?

I'm with you. I am so tired of hearing this crap about "jobs Americans will not do". As soon as the illegals get amnesty does anyone doubt that they will also demand higher wages? That will be great - another giant underclass that the middle class will subsidize. Why not just pay Americans a decent wage and get rid of the illegals?

It won't actually say that on the card, and I don't think Bush has "contempt" for the American worker. But Bush really needs to stop using that phrase "jobs Americans won't do." That terminology implies that some Americans may be too soft or too lazy to do certain jobs. Instead, his speech writers need to use this terminology: "jobs that Americans don't want to do." There's a subtle but importance difference in those phrases. The revised terminology doesn't imply that Americans are soft or lazy. It just says they don't want to do the job, for whatever reason and the reason doesn't matter.

I think the truth is in between Bush's position and Schlaffly's position: there aren't enough Americans who want to do some jobs to keep certain industries running at the current size of these industries.
