April 24, 2006 - A former CIA officer who was sacked last week after allegedly confessing to leaking secrets has denied she was the source of a controversial Washington Post story about alleged CIA secret detention operations in Eastern Europe, a friend of the operative told NEWSWEEK.

The fired official, Mary O. McCarthy, “categorically denies being the source of the leak,” one of McCarthy’s friends and former colleagues, Rand Beers, said Monday after speaking to McCarthy. Beers said he could not elaborate on this denial and McCarthy herself did not respond to a request for comment left by NEWSWEEK on her home answering machine. A national security advisor to Democratic Party candidate John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign, Beers worked as the head of intelligence programs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff and later served as a top deputy on counter-terrorism for President Bush in 2002 and 2003. McCarthy, a career CIA analyst, initially worked as a deputy to Beers on the NSC and later took over Beer’s role as the Clinton NSC’s top intelligence expert.

the CIA was not necessarily accusing her of being the principal, original, or sole leaker of any particular story. Intelligence officials privately acknowledge that key news stories about secret agency prison and “rendition” operations have been based, at least in part, upon information available from unclassified sources."

It is the parts that are from classified sources that interest me.

Am I wrong, did she NOT confess?

The PRESS reported that she did, but NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING for sure except that she was FIRED for leaking classified material, everything else, is pure speculation or spin!

Well that's interesting. I can only hope the AG is developing the case against her and she'll be in jail soon. But the way things work in this country lately, I'm not holding my breath.

You can tell McCarthy was in the Clinton Administration. She's a liar.

Mo1 was listening to Angle's report, but more carefully than I. Here is her post:

Jim Angle from FNC just did a report about this He reported that Mary only confessed to leaking classified documents to reporters .. one of them being Dana Priest .. Angle said the Prison story was just one of many stories Dana reported on Rand Beer is playing word games

My husband and I are becoming more convinced every day there is a two tier justice system in this country and we aren't happy with it.

Peach, today Rush said pretty much the same thing, except he called it a 'shadow government'. All those Clinton leftovers and very slow housecleaning at the CIA made this possible, IMO.

Of course- I might better have left that part out of the quote- I was interested that she didn't SEEM to be the only one involved at the agency.

Why do we sit back and take this crap? Isikoff needs his leakers, too. I'm campaigning for Isikoff to get indicted.

You're right, he's a snake. He's written a couple stories recently that were just hack jobs. Loves to use "unnamed" sources. Journalism has no place for people like him, he's pathetic.

Only confessed to leaking to reporters. What's the difference? If she leaked, she leaked.

I still want to understand why she wasn't arrested on the spot, put in cuffs and marched off to jail ???? Is treason no longer a crime?

I sense a little impatience here, my friend. James Taranto spoke about the question you raised. He said,

"Why isn't she in handcuffs?" Andrew McCarthy wonders about Mrs. McCarthy. The obvious answer is that she was fired based on an internal investigation, and the Justice Department, which would handle any prosecution, operates at its own pace. The Post notes a less obvious answer: Charging her with a crime could "force a trial that several former intelligence officials said could wind up airing sensitive information."
His comment makes sense to me. The link is here.

Folks,

The official CIA statement said she was caught and admitted to leaking classified information to media sources on several occassions.

She failed a polygraph, and I would bet, the investigators had known before hand she was involved in leaking but they wanted to see how she reacted when polygraphed. She was polygraphed because she was a SUSPECT. Someone else may have tipped them off about her or they were able to connect dots leading back to her.

She is guilty as sin. The CIA would not have fired and frog marched out someone as senior as her, if she had not admitted guilt. She had allot of influence and had Bill Clinton's ear in the last administration. THIS IS A HUGE CATCH.

Beers must be up to his ears in this and he is scared to death. Isakoff is an extreme liberal and he may be tied in too as a receiving tips from liberals in the CIA, NSA, FBI or DOJ.

Folks, these leaks have been going on for about 4 years! Many, many reporters will be implicated as receiving classified information from these rogue agents.

They have McCarthy dead to rights, and Berger, Clarke, Beers, Wilson, Plame, Zinni, Kerry, ROCKEFELLER, DURBIN, Wapo, Times, Newsweek, Time mag, et al are SCARED TO DEATH.

The gig is up and many people will be implicated in a coordinated conspiracy to bring down the Bush Administration. This will surpass Nixon's sins and history will judge it as such.

This administration will not let this go, knowing that the dems will try and impeach Bush, and they are trying to bring down Cheney, Rove and of course Libby.

The idiots dems brought a knife to a gun fight on this one.

This will be the story of this decade.

Really? The university where they hate the military and Michelle Malkin.

Joe Wilson went to Santa Barbara, the other hippie-dippie school.
