Bush Says Massive Deportation Is Not Realistic(Ike did it, so can Bush!)

President Bush in Irvine today called for a rational, temporary guest worker program and said that attempting to deport as many as 12 million undocumented workers illegally in the United States was a policy that was not going to work.

Bush capped a four-day trip to California with a visit to the Orange County Business Council, made up of 300 businesses, where he gave his most detailed comments on immigration since a bipartisan compromise in the Senate fell apart more than two weeks ago.

Congress returned to Washington today from its holiday recess with immigration policy one of the key unresolved issues on its agenda.

"We cannot lose sight of that we are talking about human beings that need to be treated with respect," Bush told the group, adding, "Massive deportation of human beings is not going to work."

As he has before, Bush tried to temper his call for tough enforcement.

"You can be a nation of law and a compassionate nation at the same time," he said.

"had an interesting approach by saying that if you'd been here for five years or less, you're treated one way, and five years or more, you're treated another."

You can call that quote whatever you want. If you dont think of it as a very careful endorsement then I disagree with you.

Here's my plan, George (and I'm sure you will pay attention):

Build the wall from CA to TX now to stop any more illegals from coming in! Be sure to pump up security for those coming in by air and chase down and deport those that fail to go home after their visa expires. How? Add more and better border control agents at airports

Heavily fine and then jail non-complying employers who hire the illegals. Then, pump up the police forces to handle all the crime that will inevitably follow when the illegals can't find work.

Ship all the illegals now in our jails back to their countries of origin.

Next: Find a way to ID all visitors to the US, one that is not easy to counterfeit (as are all SS cards, Green cards, passports, voter records, Mexican IDs and State-issued driver's licenses now being freely used by illegals). In other words, we must face the difficult, but inevitable idea of a national ID card that cannot be forged or counterfeited and a simple way to pass them through some kind of machine that instantly identifies false or mis-used cards. Deport anyone with such a damaged or false card.

As for the remaining millions, urge them to go home by every means possible and allow them to return to the US only when they meet the conditions of legal immigration. That means a gradual, but non-stop system of deportation.

NO AMNESTY for those that remain here!

Locate and jail all "coyotes" and other groups that support or facilitate illegal immigration. That might include some churches and the ACLU.

If some illegals are "proven" agricultural workers, and can be identified as such, allow them to stay for two years, but provide them with an unbreakable "agri-worker" ID card that can be renewed if they provide evidence of actual work in agriculture in a specific place or state.

Stop or heavily tax all methods of sending money back to countries of origin.

. Stop making it easy for illegals to get drivers licenses or other unacceptable ID cards. Cut Federal funding to States that are now providing such IDs.

Immediately pass a law that prohibits any more "citizenship by birth" methods of getting around the law. Also stop the allowance of family members to be sponsored and brought into the US by illegals already here.

George, if you will do this, you may avoid a revolution. We ain't buying any plan that suggest amnesty in any other language. We westerners are beyond angry, but you don't seem to "get it" yet. It's time to show some real cojones! In the meantime, order, with the State Govs, National Guard troops on the borders until the wall is up.

"You can be a nation of law and a compassionate nation at the same time," Bush said.

I have no compassion concerning terrorists and since we have no idea of who, where they now are, and how many illegals have come through the border then we have no idea how many might be terrorists. Enforce the law and protect the borders Mr. President, your compassion should be for the AMERICAN PEOPLE.

I have never really thought about it before...why on God's green earth are we provide legal services for and jailing criminals that aren't even American citizens. That's just rampant insanity.

I just don't see a massive blanket amnesty ever going through again.

I don't either, but it really doesn't matter, because doing nothing amounts to the same thing, which is what I do expect.

You hit it on the head... I think the real objective here is to do absolutely nothing and hope all this talk of immigration reform 'blows over'.
What this administration (and the Dems in Congress) really wants is the status quo.

The massive deportation angle is a straw man, and I am beyond angry that the president is using it. Who is advising this man?! Can they get a clue already? They need to wander outside the beltway once in a while and talk to some regular people, because the relentless insults to our intelligence on this subject are really getting irritating.

It sure does, in fact I've seen many pro-amnesty people saying the same thing, hoping for nothing since that lets illegals stay as well. Amnesty would still be worse I think since it would allow millions more to come in through family chain laws. No matter how you look at it though we lose.

We don't need a national ID. Just getting the border under control will alleviate the problem to the point where it's nothing like it is today.

I also oppose a national ID, but what do you do to overcome the millions of illegals that have illegal IDs from many sources, mostly fraudulent? Ideas please.

guess what Ike didnt do it.

There is some serious rewritting of history going on here with respect to Operation Wetback.

It was a total failure. It was called off after people began protesting the feds going into LA barrios and rounding illegals up....but i see the myth lives on

Now we know what Bush means by "compassionate conservatism": liberalism!

And his view that the law can't be enforced is his guarantee to us that he won't enforce any immigration law.

Deportation might not work, but making them WANT to leave sure can! Make it a felony to be here, tax money orders sent to Mexico. They'll take themselves home, just like they got here: one at a time.

Cutting all benefits (welfare, foodstamps, etc) and fining any employer ($1,000,000) found to be employing illegal aliens would assist the mass exodus.....

IMHO, we offer to trade the Fairtax Bill for amnesty and meaningful border security..if you think about it, it solves half a dozen different problems

Like I said, securing the border will make the problem a lot less severe. Once we do that, then we can afford to be a little more deliberate in sending them back. We'd be able once again to actually punish people for using false documentation. True, it might be a little more difficult to prove guilt under current systems of documentation, but no moreso than with any other crime. And when a punishment is attached to it that actually gets applied to those who get caught, it will serve as an example, warning, and deterrent to others.

"We cannot lose sight of that we are talking about human beings that need to be treated with respect," Bush told the group, adding, "Massive deportation of human beings is not going to work."

We don't need to deport 12 million illegal aliens. We don't need to deport a single one.

All we need to do is TARGET ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS with draconian fines and even prison time when they are caught with illegal alien workers.

Once illegal employers are too afraid to risk hiring illegal aliens, the unemployed illegal aliens will try their luck moving into Canada or will go back to Mexico.

Illegal employers are the center of gravity of the illegal alien flood. If you eliminate the illegal employers, the 12 million illegal aliens will deport themselves.

Yeah- so when are he and the rest of the spineless weenies in Washington going to start treating us voting, taxpaying, legal citizens with respect?

"We don't need to deport a single one."

I disagree.

Allowing illegals to stay here is costing those of us in California alone TEN BILLION A YEAR!

I believe we should deport every illegal in America including the incarcerated (after we build a fence/wall and secure the borders). Why should we spend FIFTY GRAND A YEAR incarcerating other countries' criminals. That is one of the HUGE COSTS involved with illegals. Imagine how many AMERICAN FELONS we could incarcerate if we deported the incarcerated illegals.

And if you or anyone else thinks that just because these illegals can't get a job; they are gonna pack up and go home; you are in for a RUDE AWAKENING!

Go home to what?
These illegals will do whatever it takes to stay here including crimes! Does MS13 ring a bell? And if we don't deport them after they are captured but incarcerate them; heck they're better off incarcerated in America then trying to subsist where they came from.

They have nothing to lose by not staying here...
stay here or stay here. LOL

Does your proposal require proof that the employee knew he was hiring illegals? i'm happy to put out of business employers who KNOWINGLY hire illegals. ......... Bush in the speech said that we can't make employers into immigration police, and I agree with that. If I run a mom-and-pop store, and need to hire someone, I don't want to be responsible for launching a criminal investigation first to prove that the person is legal.

It seems that the politicians, including Bush, are making things WAAAAY harder than they need to be.

If you run a Mom and Pop store, are you responsible for charges on stolen credit cards? Are you the "Credit Card Fraud Police"?

No.

The store owner simply swipes the credit card and, if there is anything wrong with the card (reported stolen, over the credit limit, expired, cancelled by the owner, etc., etc.), the VISA computer will simply answer back "TRANSACTION NOT AUTHORIZED" or words to that effect.

The same thing would happen if I try to log in to your FR account. Without your password, the FR computer rejects my attempted entry.

If the U.S. Government can put a man on the moon, why can't the U.S. Government have a web site that correlates Social Security Numbers with name, age, address, phone numbers and all the other data that the Internal Revenue Service already has on us?

The employers fills in the Social Security number and name, age, address, phone number, etc. of the prospective employee and cliks, "SEND".

If the data matches, the U.S. Government computer would answer back:

VALID SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND IRS DATA. PRINT A HARD COPY OF THIS PAGE FOR YOUR EMPLOYMENT RECORD.

If the data shows that that Social Security number and the personal data do not match, the computer would answer back:

INVALID SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND IRS DATA. HIRING NOT AUTHORIZED.

The employer then does exactly as the store clerk does when a credit card is rejected. He simply says, "Sorry. Your card was rejected."
