"An attack like this takes weeks to plan and execute. You can argue that Osama's audio tape was the trigger, but some group like al-Qaeda in Iraq had to have planned the attack weeks ago."

You don't think they could plan the attacks out in advance and just be waiting for the signal to implement them?

What are you talking about?

Cairo was the most disgusting city I have ever seen in my life, and I have been to over 40 different nations.

I'll never get to Egypt and the rest of the beautiful, historic ME at this rate. It just isn't safe. What a shame.

It is a shame. I am so glad I visited Egypt at age 17 when it was beautiful and safe. I got to see many beautiful and historic sites, had a wonderful dinner inside a glorious Alexandria home, was taken around to see Egyptian entertainment by a local, and even spent a memorable night on the Great Pyramid. I don't guess my sons will get to do any of that.

I have always wanted to go to Egypt too. I missed my chance back in the early 1960's. My mother in law invited me to go with her and then, for a reason I never understood, she UNinvited me. I will not speak ill of the dead, but I would like to.....

I could never convince my husband to go there because he didn't do business there and and there was nothing there he wanted to hunt.

This totally fits the pattern of Al Qaeda. They hit two types of targets:

1) Places in the non-Muslim world where a lot of Muslims live. (NYC, DC, Madrid, London)

2) Places in the Islamic world where a lot of non-Muslims visit. (Bali, Iraq, Amman, Egyptian resorts).

This is Criminal Studies 101. They go where they CAN go. Serial killers go after prostitutes because they are on the streets in the dark, wee hours. Islamist killers go where they can pass for normal citizens, where there is a healthy Muslim population.

Juan was dumber by far than his usual dumb.

Darn...I missed it!!! It's my favorite thing to watch Brit or Kristol try to explain something to Juan. Brit really put his head in his hands? It must have been bad!

Cairo is not immediately beautiful but there is no other city like it. It has such condensed human intensity, but not everyone will appreciate that :)

The famous Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz was asked why he sat everyday and looked over Tahrir Square, at all the poverty and crowding and dirt, and he said "It's true it is not beautiful view, but I am a novelist, not a painter".

the situation is still very confused. CNN reporting 10 dead, Fox 18 dead, bbc 22 dead, jerusalem post 30 dead, and early reporting was up to 100 dead. It's still kind of difficult to get an idea about the magnitude of this incident. (although any loss of life at the hands of these monsters is regrettable)

I was last in Dahab in 1992. A beautiful town at the time - mainly popular with the backpacker set as you could get a room in a hostel for about 5 dollars a night, incredible beaches, outstanding weather, world class scuba and snorkelling and the most CHILLED OUT ATTITUDE I've ever encountered in an Arab country. Also popular with Israleli's even back then. Possibly a little toooo chilled out as Drugs and Alchohol were rife at the time (perhaps part of the attraction for me back then!). Anyway, I understand that it has developed a lot since then without loosing too much of its soul. It's a great base for visiting Mount Sinai. I will have a prayer for those caught up in this.
