No Tiene Licencia (Vanity)

Here in the DFW area we have a new Spanish-language newspaper, La Tribuna. Unlike the two current Spanish-language dailies in our area, La Estrella and Al Dia (published by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News respectively), La Tribuna is published independently in Arlington. A tabloid with a marked pro-illegal slant (headine of first edition: "Ya Basta Bush!", "Stop Bush Now!"), it's chock-full of the usual propaganda about how Mexicans were here first, no human being is illegal, burning the Mexican flag is wrong, etc. It's also full of ads -- many from well-known local merchants.

One of these ads caught my eye this weekend, and I'd like to share it with you. It's an ad for a local used car dealer (I digitized the name and address to avoid legal hassles) whose advertising copy leaves no doubt as to the demographic to whom they're selling. The ad (and my translation) appears below:

No credit, no citizenship, no driver's license required. I found that funny for some reason. I probably would have found it a great deal more funny had not two of the last three people to ram my car in traffic been illegal aliens with no insurance and no right to be here.

Un millar chistes...

Yeah. In DFW you HAVE to have a car in orer to live, and --adding insult to injury -- these car dealers exploit the desperate illegal who has nowhere else to go. Call it "car-sharking".

I'm too fed up with illegals to call it that. I see it as justice when two unscrupulous people meet up and one or both of them gets the shaft.

I understand your anger, but don't be like that. Most illegals really are good people. Yes, they broke the law coming here, but you have to understand that in Mexican culture "law" is a very tenous concept; since many Mexican cops and judges are corrupt criminals who prey on the weak, respect for the law is much lower than here in the U.S. In Mexico, laws are more of a method used to shake down the little guy than a sacred bond between citizens; consequently, as a matter of survival many Mexicans learn early to disregard, circumvent, or otherwise get around laws that interfere with daily life. Also, for many Mexicans, working in the U.S. is all that keeps the wolf of starvation away from their door.

None of this excuses illegal immigation, of course. My point is that instead of getting angry at Jose Sanchez who just wants to keep the kids fed, we should direct our anger at the real criminals -- the politicians and businessmen on both sides for their personal gain.

Not that our anger will do any good. Protests and political action are futile. Like it or not, the Powers That Be long ago decided that North America is to be integrated into a single entity -- first economically, then politcally. Short of armed revolution (from which you can count me out, by the way), nothing you or I can do will stop this from happening, so save your anger and use it as fuel for your efforts to prepare for the future.

My advice: learn Spanish, rearrange your life so you can survive as the standard of living changes, and get used to the idea that your future will be spent as a citizen of the North American Union.

shouldn't the citizens of America demand that all Spanish versions of papers, magazines etc. be printed in BOTH languages!

This is an idea whose time has come!

The business is probably illegal also so they probably don't care - it will all be like the wild wild west once Mexico reclaims "their" land.

Isn't Bush's vision of our future shaping up wonderfully?

And how about those Republican Senators falling right in line? Spector and McLame make me ill.
