That we past an amnesty bill in 1986 doesn't mean that solved the problem from that date prior - No, this current illegal immigration / guest workers not leaving, etc, problem has been very long in the making. Not patrolling our borders enough, etc, these are problems that started long before GWB -
Frankly I don't see this as complex at all. We have laws. Those laws were broken. There are prescriptions for what is supposed to take place when that happens. This is very simple.
I hear your sentiment here and in theory (to a degree) I agree with you. However, in the real world, in practice there is no easy solution, no simple remedy for what we have now - Between 14-20 million new illegal aliens living within our borders (a sizable portion NOT assimilating to our custom and culture to boot).
I agree 100% with you that this is a problem. However, I am not of the mind frame that GWB is a sell out or doesn't care about this issue or the lack of assimilation doesn't concern him. It most certainly does. It is just he is looking to a different course of remedy then you obviously agree with. Fine, good people can break from each other on issues now and then. So be it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Let's say you are correct for a moment. Okay, we allow those here to have guest permits. We naturalize them in 2012. In 2012 that 15 to 30 million start voting. Immediately those 15-30 million file for next of kin immigration permits. Within five years 15 to 30 million people bring over between two and five more people. Not only that, these 15 to 30 million people have children.
I don't see it exactly this way. I see the notion of trying to implement a system which begins to deal with the current illegals who have been here more then 3 years (lets say) into a process in which they become documented.
There are obviously some other measures that need to be implemented. Next of kin restrictions should be placed, we need to address the notion of illegals having children in this Country not immediately having citizenship (that is foolishness). We definitely need more border patrols through a variety of means (as for a fence?? I'm not sure on this yet. If it is worth it or not).
I simply see GWB looking to address this issue in increments. Just like the Soc Sec debate (not to go off topic to far). But he is looking to get a small % into private accounts...as an increment in the right direction. It would then be up to the GOP further down the road to implement further needed adjustments to the Soc Sec system (allowing a larger % into private accounts for example).
Lastly, I just think many who are going off the deep end (IMO) over immigration are doing so from a very self-absorbed mind frame. As I said before, there are times without question when walking away from a political party is fine to do (lots of times)...but we are in a very specific time in our nations history.....and not only do our soldiers deserve better....the reality is the ilk of what IS the democrat party today simply cannot be trusted with a majority in any branch of Gov't.
