(AP) LOS ANGELES Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday said that building a 700-mile wall along the border with Mexico to deter illegal immigration would amount to "going back to the Stone ages," and urged the federal government to use high-tech gear and more patrols to secure the nation's southern boundary.
"We are landing men on the moon and in outer space using all these great things. I think that other technology really can secure the borders," the Republican governor said in an interview on ABC's "This Week."
"If I say now, 'Yes, let's build the wall,' what would prevent you from building a tunnel? How many tunnels have been built in these last 10 years? I mean, we've detected tunnels left and right that people can drive trucks through," he added.
The comments were Schwarzenegger's most detailed to date on the border wall proposal, which was included in legislation enacted in the U.S. House of Representatives. Schwarzenegger has said previously that fences might be appropriate in some areas, but raised doubts about the effectiveness of a wall snaking along the border.
Speaking on ABC, the governor said, "I think that it will be ludicrous to limit yourself to just building a wall. We're going back to the Stone ages here."
Schwarzenegger said relying on a wall as the only means to stop illegal immigration was "crazy." But at other points he spoke more broadly in opposition to the proposal, on practical and symbolic terms. He alluded to the Berlin Wall, suggesting that such a structure on the U.S. border would send the wrong message to Mexico, "our friends ... our trading partners."
"We can't do that, either," the governor said.
Schwarzenegger, a native of Austria, also repeated his opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants, but provided few specifics of what requirements an illegal immigrant would have to meet to achieve legal status in the United States.
"I think we should give them a chance for redemption," he said.
Schwarzenegger also said it's unrealistic to consider uprooting or driving out the nation's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.
"It would cost $500 billion. Who's going to pay for that?" he asked.
Schwarzenegger immigrated to the United States in 1968 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1984, but has retained his Austrian citizenship.
It has worked in Israel, it can work on the US/Mexican border.
I Agree!
We need the wall, armed guards, and real penalties for breaking the law.
Arnie's really changing his tune.
They suffer from terror attacks constantly.
Ending welfare for illegals, going after illegal-hiring employers, and repealing the anchor baby laws would save us money. .....alot of money. AND it would drive millions of the criminals back to their third-world homeland.
USE BOTH!

Responding to polls showing that a strong majority of Americans support building a wall across the U.S.-Mexican border, 2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton announced Saturday that she backs a border wall plan that would be supplemented by a "smart fence."
"A physical structure is obviously important," Mrs. Clinton told the New York Daily News. "A wall in certain areas would be appropriate."
The News said she also supported deploying a high-tech "smart fence" that could spot people approaching from 200 or 300 yards. Clinton also said the deployment of surveillance drones and infrared cameras should also be considered.
A Time magazine poll released two weeks ago showed that 56 percent of Americans supported building a wall along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexican border - with only 40 percent opposed...

We don't want a wall, we want a 24/7 patrolled fence array. Fences are much easier to see and shoot through.

Relying on Arnold is ludicrous. Arnold is moving left more and more. I realize we have no alternative but he is starting to grate on me.

"We're going back to the Stone ages here."
Arnold has got that right. A lack of border control will take us back to the Stone Age in short order.

No need to reinvent the wheel... Israel has some excellent technology which I'm sure they'd lend to us.

Looks like she's not supporting the idea of a wall the entire length.
And there already IS a wall in certain areas.
Arnie's done now,you can stick a fork in him now.
build a wall 1940miles and set the cap at 2.5billion let companies people bid on the contract.
Oops make that $4.9billion for the 1940mile double layered wall
I think busting and fining the businesses that hire illegals in the first place has to be a part of the solution, too.
True many employers have slipped their ethical moorings but I'll bet we could still do without a wall & rely instead on inland enforcement.
On the Michael Medvid show, he revealed that Israel will be building a 400 mile wall by the time they are done. You know what, if little Israel can build a 400 mile wall, I think we can build a 2,000 mile wall.
I agree...it makes much more sense to levy a $1 million fine against anyone caught employing an illegal.
1. Noone is saying that a wall should be built as the 'only' means to combat illegal immigration.
2. The Berlin Wall nonsense is just that -- complete nonsense.
3. He does support amnesty, whether he wants to admit it or not.
