The fact is, certain medical conditions and pathogens do indeed affect people differently on the basis of race. Are we going to sacrifice lives on the altar of PC?

For the race-baiters, the answer is an emphatic yes. This would not be the first time that these self-appointed 'advocates' have put their self-aggrandizement and creating a controversy there should be none far above the interests of those whom they profess to champion.

Virtually every new drug will be tested against genetic profiles (especially cancer drugs, but others as well).

And the big secret is that large numbers of drugs that are potentially very effective in humans have been discarded early in the research process because they failed the initial animal testing on mice, monkeys, and other lab animals when human testing would have shown them very effective. The puzzle is how to get around that roadblock. There are no good answers.

When I was in school, I was taught a fairly simple definition of discrimination: Treating people differently when they are the same in every relevant dimension or the same when they are different in relevant dimensions. A sharp difference in patient outcomes strikes me as being relevant.

I agree with the sentiment that it'll be better when we can flag specific genetic markers, but using the crude tools we have available now is better than nothing.

Wait till the dogs and cats hear about this. Next thing we know we will have to dump some of our drugs because they can only be used in dogs instead of cats. OMG....can't use tylenol in a dog because it just flat out kills cats...ohhh...the horror....the horror....

Yeah, but will drug companies invest more in research, development and promotion of a drug serving a larger and richer white market? Will they stiff a promising drug serving a smalle, poorer black patient populationm? Or will the "black" drug end up far more expensive because it sells fewer doses?

I'm not fond of the government intruding on business decisions, but this looks like a case where some tax breaks to support affirmative action wouldn't be out of line.
