In immigration debate, Boxer doesn't think boycott will help cause
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 4/23/6 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross

California Sen. Barbara Boxer has a message for those planning to join in on the pro-immigration work boycott planned for May 1 -- cool it.

"You've made your point,'' Boxer told us Friday. "And while I support your right to boycott, I don't think it does anything more than what you have already achieved with the earlier demonstrations.

"It's time to put the focus and heat back on Washington to get a fair and balanced plan passed."

The idea behind the planned immigrant worker boycott is to show the country -- through massive "no shows" at work and school -- just how strong the sentiment is for making sure those here illegally don't bear the brunt of immigration reform.

The proposed boycott followed weeks of demonstrations last month when hundreds of thousands rallied in cities across the nation -- and thousands of high school students left their classes, some waving Mexican flags.

Boxer said that although she supports anyone's right to free speech -- or even to skip work -- a boycott at this point just isn't strategically smart.

"If people don't show up for work in emergency services, or hospitals or nursing homes, it's just not going to go over very well,'' she said.

The same goes for kids, too: "Taking students out of school when they should be learning isn't going sit well either, even among people who support immigration reform."

"The demonstrations have worked -- they stopped what was a very onerous House bill. If they want to have rallies, then do it on a Saturday with their families."

No kidding. Boycotts rarely do anything, no matter who is sponsoring them. It's never even possible to discern their precise impact against the background of the usual ups and downs of the market. Boycotts just make the people carrying them out feel better about themselves.

Boxer doesn't think! PERIOD!

I only wish Condi Rice would come home this year and run against DiFi in November.

The Democrats are obviously reading the polls, and realizing that these "protests" are just inflaming opinion against amnesty among grass roots voters.

The question is whether our Republican leadership is also listening to the American people, or if they will stubbornly cling to their flawed amnesty plan.

in other words: "this marches and boycott business is really p***ing people off, and backfiring on the border crossers and on the democrats"
Doesn't it remind you of the time Clinton's anti-gun campaign led to a dramatic increase in NRA membership?

Kids need to stay in school because scholls are given $$$$$$$ baised on daily head counts. Kids staying home really hurts the NEA coffers.

Says Boxturd " Sweep it under the rugs illegals while we work on amnesty , er, a comprehensive immigration plan. The more you illegals protest the harder it will be to provide you amnesty, er , I mean a comprehensive immigration reform package."

Boycotts and walkouts are a staple in this country and can do a lot for a cause. For instance, look at the walkout by the NYC Transit workers a few days before Christmass last year. That did a lot for their cause . . .

Oh, no, wait, that did a lot to their cause.

Too late, the Commies have hijacked the movement and the Commies won't be handing out US flags for the marchers to wave.

In other news, the Mafia is planning a spending boycott and also massive "no shows" at work (excluding hit-men) on May 15 to show the country just how strong the sentiment is for making sure those who make illegal activities a way of life don't bear the brunt of law and order legislation reform.
