Many in GOP Will Sit Out Bush Talk (Grassroots Angry Over Amnesty)
Los Angeles Times ^ | April 23, 2006 | Christopher Goffard and Jean Pasco

Posted on 04/23/2006 5:27:56 AM PDT by nj26

When President Bush arrives in Irvine on Monday morning to pitch his immigration reform plan, one of his party's best-known local standard-bearers will be maintaining a respectful — and politically careful — distance.

Dana Rohrabacher, the nine-term Republican congressman from Huntington Beach, generally supports the president, but disagrees with his immigration policies. So Rohrabacher plans to sit out Bush's speech to the Orange County Business Council.

"I don't want to be behind him looking glum and not applauding," Rohrabacher said. "So as not to be rude to the president — which I think is inexcusable — I think I'll just be staying away."

Rohrabacher's remarks reflect deep unhappiness within the GOP toward Bush's immigration stance, particularly in Republican Orange County, which is famous as a caldron of border-crackdown sentiment and where many Republicans criticize his guest-worker plan as amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Bush's decision to speak here might prove an embarrassing miscalculation, said John J. Pitney, a government professor at Claremont McKenna College who used to live in Orange County and worked for the national GOP.

"I'm not sure they had their O.C. antennae up," he said of White House schedulers. "They don't realize how complicated this issue is. It's possible this is a Daniel-in-the-lions'-den moment, but that's not really characteristic of this administration."

President Bush and American tax payers had better wake up and get with the program or we have had it as a nation. Illegal aliens are draining billions of dollars in public aid, scholarships and assistance that should be going to American citizens. That money is coming directly out of OUR pockets. Those jobs are jobs our citizens and their families are being denied.

Come on....I know this is true and I see it all the time and I've done the same thing before but here's some facts I'd like you to think about.
I honestly do not believe for one moment that anyone on this website can say that Pres.Bush did not know about this problem of illegal Mexicans wading the Rio Grande. He was an elected Governor of Texas and resides in Texas to this day!Now he is the President of the USA.Good conclusion,no?

Without a doubt..does anyone here believe he doesn't have a count on what the American majority of taxpayers and taxpaying businesses that are the very foundation that supports this country want done with this situation they've caused? It's not how many e-mails the majority send nor how long and how loud we scream that's gonna sway this man's decision,(God knows I've sent more than my share).

How long has Bush known about this problem? He knew many yrs ago of the financial burden it was putting on the people of America.Do you think Hospitals and care groups have laid back all these yrs and not said a word?Even though they were going broke?I don't THINK SO!The politicians just always wrote a check to them from money that wasn't theirs(it was yours and mine and our childrens and grandchildren's college tuition). We didn't know what the snakes were breeding all these yrs, but, we do now.

For God's Sake...the Mexican border is a little less than 6 hrs from his house...and he lives in Texas?

Do you think he's never met or knows any illegal Mexican working people here in Texas. If your is answer NO..I don't know what to tell you because I knew a plenty when I went to school 46 yrs ago.

Do you think he really cares what you or the majority of Americans desires to do with this situation they've created?

The American people cannot afford an amnesty program nor can they afford another President such as the likes of him....choose wisely my friend with much thought and searching.

Dear Michael Savage:

You only listen to your own songs...no matter what anyone else says...you got this rehearsed script you foist on all comers...and it's goofy...with unconnected accusations...all aimed at destroying our country and whoever might be leaders.

With you in a thread it's like wierd theatrical production of Waiting for Godot.

Your white hot anger is so furious as to border on gibberish.

Here's a sample: "Anyone who follows in lockstep with a political party and doesn't care WHAT they do or what part of their platform and oath they betray doesn't deserve the title "citizen"."

What? Citizens are not special recipients of a "title". Platform? Oaths? You may be recieving short wave radio signals on your dental work.

Please don't bother the poor Admin. about this also.
You must be driving them crazy.

You said this:

"If these politicians do allow these INVADERS to stay here and grant them citizenship, then that is indeed a "Sell Out"."

I think most folks would call it something like a criminal betrayal of public trust.

A Crime in and of itself.

But then most folks are not sitting here swapping gripes and playing "armchair fixers of everything under the sun". Most folks have a Life.

"So what? He is bankrupting our country and allowing it to be invaded at the same time."

So this: We still have a country. We're fighting the war on terror on the terrorists' turf and not in America. And the Dow-Jones is within a few hundred points of reaching a record high. That's what!

You are a realist, MV, and your points are good ones. The arguments you have given are why I said what I did in my post. We must spread the truth that the Democrat Party would be much worse, that President Bush has prevented a repeat of 9/11 and taken the war on terror to the terrorists, and that the economy is booming (despite Democrat propaganda). We must also let the Republicans know that their base is furious for the reasons that you and I have both stated.

Many people lurk here on FR. My posts have been quoted in the "Mainstream Newsmedia", not frequently but enough to indicate that many people, even those hostile to FR, read these posts.

This is one way to get the truth out.

"Bush has nothing to do with it."

Wrong! Bush had everything to do with it. 9/11 was never repeated BECAUSE OF BUSH.

"Yeah well when a bunch of us stop voting for the Republican party, and go third party that is going to be it."

That noise you hear is the Democrats rejoicing. And if you think things couldn't be worse you're in for a surprise.

BTW, your third party might like to nominate Ross Perot. He's had experience on the campaign trail.

It's bad. I know. Do you think the Democrats would do better or would not be worse?

Okay. Perhaps you're right. Middle America--the Republican base--is furious at the failures of the Republican Congress and Presidency. I am.

I think many of us see it as America's moment to choose. The polls would indicate that it is far from a faction of the Republican base only that think so.

Apparently the Democrat base is not in solid lockstep with the idea of being a global communist state in perpetual Third World chaos.

It might be well to remember vividly who is; regardless of their self-chosen labels.

This guy might have just committed political suicide for standing up for what the true Republican party stands for.

I dont think anybody is going to CARE if bush "admonishes" him, because your premise that the GOP is for lawlessness and forgiving lawbreaking is crap.
