The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.
Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIAs rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.
Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.

"What an amazingly neutral article, with none of the Times usual innuendo and "analysis". I would guess no one could come up with a quick way to spin this, as anyone with their eyes open enough to read clearly sees this is a case of treason by a Clinton partisan to damage the Bush administration. It will be amusing to watch how this is spun in the coming weeks, as details about the officer connections to other democrats emerges."
Miss Marple and I have commented over the past 4-5 years about when real news breaks out, the MSM will often take 24 to 72 hours to really respond. They are used to lying and calling that news. So when real news like this happens, they are totally unprepared.
I bet they will push the poor whistleblower sad sack story sometime next week.
"After all, how far out does the treason net go?"

Go to Ali's reply above to see how far this net may end up.
Having said that, a generic moaning and whining about attacking Whistle Blowers will be in full mantra before next week is over.
"The media seems tone death to the key aspects of the issue. Note the comment from the Washington Post:"
The Media is not tone deaf. The Media is scared S**tless!
The Culture of Corruption pervades the LEFT! and Bingo, one of theirs just got nailed and in order to avoid long term jail will COOPERATE!
COOPERATE is the active verb! SNITCH to those caught in the WEB of LIES and DECEIT!
"The President is a WIMP..."
Republicans are masochists. They can be pushed around at the whim of dems. I have NEVER heard a Republican stand up to a dem ans tell him/her, "What you just said is not only a lie but a DAMNED lie! I demand you either prove your comment or apologise to the American people!" (WMD and katrina come to mind)
"Her being with the system so long, she knew the limitations of the box. I can just picture her doing the "you're picking on me 'cause I'm female" ... the interviewer "
It is already being spun. Dems are saying that this is all show and that Bush's LEAK is far worse and hypocritical. They are also saying this is to divert from the high gas prices which are bringing millions into Bush's pockets.
Wash/Po's Pulitzer Prize winner (for national security reporting).
It is information like this that just makes me unbelievably irritated:
When Bush was warned away from divulging any information that would support the case for war in Iraq, this little partisan bitch was one of the people warning him he couldn't say anything in his own defense. And when he would give a CIA-approved narrow statement about Iraq, it was nasty little partisan hacks like her immediately leaking to the press that everything the President just said was a lie.
Especially when I have liberal friends that say "the government aka Bush Administration" has been going around discrediting these people to support their war and "silence any and all critics." The truth appears to be the other way around, but it is exceptionally difficult to argue that point. They have it completely backwards and have no real grasp of just how dangerous this situation is.
pinging the Captain himself...
What is the keyword for these stories???
The aide and some others who spoke about Ms. McCarthy were granted anonymity because they did not want to be identified as discussing her official duties because she be under criminal investigation."she be under criminal investigation"? Seems the Times' website needs a copy editor.
It also proves that he is either incompetent, or biased. The rest of us have known for half a day that the perp is a democRat, and a Kerry donor. Mitchell either didn't have the ability to learn this, or she left it out because she is biased.
Dear Grampa, I was asking myself the day this story broke "How do we know it's a HE?".
Check out this NewsMeat search.
Total: $7,700 to dems since late 2002.
