WASHINGTON The CIA has fired a senior officer for leaking classified information to the media, including material for Pulitzer Prize-winning stories in The Washington Post that said the agency maintained a secret network of prisons overseas for high-ranking terrorism suspects.
The termination, announced Friday, marks the latest in a series of high-profile crackdowns on spy agency and Bush administration officials accused of unauthorized disclosures of classified information.
The CIA would not identify the fired officer, citing Privacy Act protections.
But current and former intelligence officials identified her as Mary McCarthy, a former White House aide who until this week held a senior position in the CIA's Inspector General's Office.

This is the CIA, not Wal-Mart!
Look, Sandy Berger "gave up" all his friends to stay out of jail.
Did you hear that gasoline is expensive, there is civil war in Iraq, and the bird flu has been found in Massachusetts?
Obviously the takeaway on this story is not the treasonous behaviour of this CIA employee; if the CIA rendition center story is a deliberate falsehood it is further proof that Bush lied.
"Hence, there's now some speculation elsewhere on the Internet that the "secret prisons" story originially began inside the CIA in an effort to identify leakers. McCarthy took the bait and leaked this false story to Dana Priest of the WashPost.
Which means that Priest's Pulitzer Prize is also completely bogus"
That was one of my first thoughts. Disinformation used to detect traitors. Is there a procedure in place to revoke a Pulitzer if the the "news story" is subsequently found to be false?
The web has been scrubbed on anything about Mary except her appointment. She was Special Assistant to the Prez is a no big deal.....So was Monica!! and you can bet your wheaties that Mary knew about Monica.
Mary McCarthy needs to do serious jail time. National security and the integrity of our Intelligence Agencies depend on our government having the balls to clean house.
Hillary has been quiet, too. Ahe was VERY outspoken on the leak subject. Most matters she leaves to someone else to do her bidding....but this one, she stepped into vigorously. There's your connection because all benefits from weakening the Repubs is meant to flow to Hillary. She gives the orders.
Condi addressed it. The system of transporting criminals has a real name and I believe it is within treaty agreements.
I think they can indict. But that's not likely. They've already won a Pulitzer for disclosing the information to the public. Can't take that away from them, can we?
We are no longer a nation of law. We are a nation of who can control the most spin.
I would doubt this was a sting operation.
The story, as false as it might be, has done great harm to the US's reputation and now that the story is out there, there is no way to take it back. It will forever be part of left-wing lore and myth.
If they were going to pick an storyline for a sting operation, it would have been a more non-descript one.
In addition, this leak came out several months ago. Why did it take so long to grab her up. Even if they were monitoring her after the leak to see what else she was up to, they would have stopped it earlier given the harm the leak was doing.
That would be for the common people to try to figure out.
Don't you just like a good mystery?
;-)
That old trick will work,
on old analog machines.
Last I heard CIA Were using state of the art digital that records more detail than the analog BP,breathing.

Mary McCarthy
I'm sitting on the edge of my chair. Got popcorn?
Well said! I like your post and agree with everything you say.
It couldn't be nondescript, or the WPost wouldn't have used it. You can't catch fish with cruddy bait.
