Click for our National Anthem! (remove your caps please!) Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream: 'T is the star-spangled banner: O, long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

ANZAC DAY! Celebrating our Aussie and Kiwi Allies! Thank you!!
ANZAC Day is 25 April, and is the Holiest of Holy days in Australia and New Zealand. It commemorates the heroic landings at Gallipoli, Turkey (not far from ancient Troy), of the Australia New Zealand Army Corps during World War I, and the subsequent bloodbath where Australians, Kiwis and (surprisingly) our Turkish foe became as Brothers.
The great Turkish General and Statesman Mustafa Kemal Ataturk made Reconciliation possible between former enemies with his generous, heartfelt and poetic words after the war:
"Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side, Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries... Wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have Become our sons as well."

To a Kiwi and an Aussie, ANZAC Day is like July 4, Memorial Day and Veteran's Day all rolled into one, and then celebrated on December 7 Pearl Harbor Day -- if that makes any sense. Huge emotion.
There's some rollicking good Aussie music, and in New Zealand we have some good tunes as well (check out Goldenhorse, Shihad, Crowded House...) Dunno about the Turks, haven't checked recently.
My Guardian Angel troop will post up for ANZAC Day either at Waikumite Memorial, Glen Eden or at Piha Beach -- depends on what the RSA (Returned Serviceman's Association) want. There we will help provide crowd control and first aid if needed. Thank you to DieHard The Hunter for bringing this to our attention!! For selections of Aussie and Kiwi musicians, please look on the thread!!
Thank you!

ANZAC Biscuits
There are a few theories on the origins of ANZAC biscuits but it is certain that they came about during the First World War, around 1914-15.
Some say that they started as biscuits made by the troops with provisions they had at hand to relieve the boredom of their battle rations. Others say they came about due to resourcefulness of the women on the "home front" who wanted to make a treat for their loved ones that would survive the long journey by post to the war front.
There is even the suggestion that they originated from Scottish Oatmeal Cakes, which is entirely possible. Whatever the origin, they have won the hearts of all Aussies the globe over as the pseudo National Biscuit.
Ingredients:
1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup desiccated coconut
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 tbsp golden syrup (or honey)
1 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp boiling water
Method:
Combine the flour (sifted), oats, coconut and sugar in a bowl. Melt the butter and syrup (or honey) in a saucepan over a low heat. Mix the baking soda with the water and add to the butter and syrup. Pour the liquids into the dry ingredients and mix well. Spoon dollops of mixture, about the size of a walnut shell, onto a greased tin leaving as much space again between dollops to allow for spreading.
Bake in a moderate oven, 180C / 350F, for 15-20 minutes.
Biscuits (or bikkies) in Australia and New Zealand are what we Americans call "cookies."
Wishing our Aussie and Kiwi friends a Happy ANZAC Day!
