WASHINGTON The CIA has fired an employee for leaking classified information to the news media, including details about secret CIA prisons in Eastern Europe, officials said today.
A federal criminal investigation has also been opened.
CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano said an officer had been fired for having unauthorized contacts with the media and disclosing classified information to reporters, including details about intelligence operations.
"The officer has acknowledged unauthorized discussions with the media and the unauthorized sharing of classified information," Gimigliano said. "That is a violation of the secrecy agreement that everyone signs as a condition of employment with the CIA."
Citing the Privacy Act, the CIA would not disclose any details about the officer's identity or what he might have told the news media.
However, a law enforcement official confirmed there was a criminal investigation under way and said the CIA officer had provided information that contributed to a Washington Post story last year saying there were secret U.S. prisons in Eastern Europe. The law enforcement official spoke only on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the matter.
The Post reported that the CIA had set up a covert prison system after Sept. 11, 2001, that at various times included sites in eight countries. The story caused an international uproar, and government officials have said it did significant damage to relationships between the U.S. and allied intelligence agencies.

Firing squad, and finish.
This was a major, major act of treason, because it not only broke his secrecy oath, it severely embarrassed some of our key allies in Eastern Europe.
Those guys helped us out, dealing with this rotten murderous terrorist scum, and as a reward they got into trouble with France and the EU.
They should lock him up and throw away the key, since they no longer seem to use firing squads for treason in time of war.
That was quick. Hang him.
No hope that this CIA Agent turned in Seymour Hersh of New Yorker fame as the reporter he leaked to, is there?
Do it the CIA way....make it look like an accident.
Byron York at NRO Corner is reporting that the fired one is the one who leaked about the secret prisons to the Washington Post.
FOX News is leading with this story on the 6 o'clock news...starting now.
Dangit! I slept through the whole congressional declaration of war. At any rate, this individual may get traded to an Islamic nation for $5 million and a player to be named ;) Not a pleasant prospect. Likely they will beg for protection and mercy of the court.
Oh, I'm definitely hoping for a long long prison stay for this a-hole.
I would like to see him made an example of so other people in the CIA either quit leaking info - or won't even consider it anymore.
Bat Boy!
Treason is right. I'd tatoo a portrait of Mohammed on his chest and make him walk naked through Bahgdad on a Friday afternoon. Just he'd understand why we need secret prisons for terrorist scum.
In Europe, the reaction [to the Post story] was immediate and intense. The EU said it would launch a probe of both Poland, which is an EU member, and Romania, which hopes to become one. Both countries might be punished if the story were true, EU officials said. Romania denied the whole thing, sort of; in a statement that perhaps sounded more definitive than it was, Romania's premier said, "I repeat: We do not have CIA bases in Romania." In Poland, the new government -- it had been in office for just a few weeks and had played no role in whatever had happened before -- also issued a denial.
But, at least in Poland, the story caused enormous anger and unhappiness behind the scenes. In an interview with National Review, one source with knowledge of the Polish government's dilemma would not address the facts of the story, but called the damage "horrific." The source cited two reasons. First, the Polish government believes that it is now, as a result of the Post story, on al-Qaeda's hit list, setting off fears that Warsaw or Krakow could follow Madrid and London as European terrorist targets. And second, the leak shook the pro-American Polish government's faith in the United States. Poland has been a loyal ally of the U.S., sending troops to Iraq and keeping them there when others withdrew. That decision has been costly not only in lives -- 17 Poles have died in Iraq -- but also in terms of Poland's relations with largely anti-U.S. European governments. And now Poland worries about whether it can trust its most powerful ally. "The next time we are asked to do an operation in common, we will always think twice about your intelligence community's ability to keep a secret," the source said."
I hate when I leak..........
The CIA scumbag should be dealt with in the harshest possible way, but that in no way excuses the complicit scumbag at the Compost, presumably Dana Priest, who put that information into her story. They are both treasonous bastards.
"If this guy leaked information classified as SECRET. he should be thrown into prison. Period."
What about the reporter who was only too happy to sell her country down the river for a Pulitzer Prize!!
Any decent person who subscribes to that newspaper should cancel their subscription at once.
Bingo on both counts!
