So it all started when Cain and Abel made their offerings to the LORD? Genesis 4:3

There's not a lot of human history preceeding that event in the Old Testament.

Or perhaps Genesis 4:26. Of course, it would appear that Adam and Eve are still alive at that point.

Well, all that aside, Dr. Freud did think that religious teaching, among other things, was a source of the internalized norms and taboos he believed constituted the super-ego.

I wonder if Freud ever dealt with the 'chicken or egg' question of which came first? If one does not have a pre-existing super-ego, how would one even have the ability to dream up a religion that would impose a super-ego on oneself?

Well, it's just idle speculation as to how it all got started.
