MINNEAPOLIS - The founder of the New York-based Guardian Angels civilian patrol comes to Minneapolis today.
Curtis Sliwa (SLEE'-wuh) will offer his services to interim police chief Tim Dolan.
That follows the recent fatal shootings of a Minnetonka (minn-eh-TAHN'-kuh) man in downtown Minneapolis and of a Clemson University graduate student in the Uptown area.
Sliwa's Guardian Angels last patrolled the streets of Minneapolis 20 years ago. By the early 1990's, they were gone.
Sliwa hopes to have a group of Guardian Angels from Denver patrol trouble spots in Minneapolis this weekend.

I predict that Rybak will tell Curtis..."Thanks, but no thanks. We'll handle this."
Boy, am I glad I live on the right side of the river. While we have some crime problems over here in Good Ol' Saint Paul, the number of shootings, etc. that are happening over in Big Time Minneapolis is alarming.
Ryback doesn't seem all that interest in dealing with the problem, either. I guess he's too busy with a stadium for a baseball team that will probably be gone when contraction happens. He may also be distracted by trying to keep people from fouling his fair city with illegal cigarette smoke.
What's a few murders, after all?
Isn't this being reported in the SPPP or the S&S (Star and Sickle)
Minneapolis is just harvesting the fruits of liberalism ..lawlessness. If every minority is a victim of oppression, their violent acts aren't their fault, but society's and punishment is negligible for violent acts because the perpetrator is a minority, oppressed or needed more hugs etc. what do you expect?
The "Minnetonka man" has a name - it is Al Reitter. He is/was my husband's best friend from college. We went to the funeral and it was heart-breaking. So many people are suffering from his senseless death.
Well it was in the Pioneer Press this morning, complete with a photo.
makes me wish we had capitol punishment, but being MN, it would just end up like CA- sitting around on our dime for 30+ years.
Isn't it a shame that citizen patrols (Guardian Angels/Minutemen) have to do the jobs that elected officials won't do?
boy mayor will probably be preoccupied here:

I had never been to MN before - we live in AL - but drove there for the week for the wake, funeral, etc. I was shocked at the amount of news coverage Al's death received, but was thankful at the same time.
We enjoyed our trip up there (my husband used to live in Minneapolis with Al after college), but I cannot even describe how hard it was trying to comfort dozens of 30-year-old guys that came from across the country for his funeral. He was a great guy who actually contributed to society (unlike his murderer), and was just out for a Friday night on the town with friends. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have easily been you or me.
Is there any update about the shooter? I believe his name is Holliday. We have not heard much about him. We are considering writing a letter to the DA about giving this guy as much time as possible. Or would that just fall on deaf ears?
I caught a blurb on local news radio, but didn't hear what they're charging the
perp with. try a search on startribune.com.
you may be able to have a written 'victim-impact statement' read in court and writing
the DA couldn't hurt.
My condolences and prayers to Al's family and yours.
