How far have they gotten on that tsunami warning system?

A prayer for all those in harm's way - may God open their eyes to any dangers and enable them to find their way to safety...

I thought it took a 7 or greater to produce a tsunami.

This quake happened EIGHT HOURS AGO.No damage (well offshore) and no tsunami (not nearly big enough to generate one.)
It's just another aftershock of the December 2004 quake. There's a Magnitude 6 or higher quake in the world, on average, every 2 to 3 days.

Not anywhere near far enough. There's nothing anyone can do now but evac just in case.
Worst case scenario is that the wave is moving just this side of Mach; we'll know whether it made a tsunami sometime in the next two hours.

There's no hard and fast rule but the question is "ANY Tsunami" or a "damaging tsunami."
Tsunami only inches high can actually be measured....
You won't see a long-range (teletsunami) causing damage thousands of miles away, MINIMUM, for anything under 7.5, and really it's exceedingly rare for anything under M 8.5.
It's possible to have a damaging local tsunami for earthquakes in the 6-7 range that generate an underwater landslide, but the overwhelming majority of such quakes do not do so.

Thanks for translating - the time stamps are always confusing to me!

bd, is this the second time you've pinged me tonight?
