1995: Many feared dead in Oklahoma bombing
A huge car bomb has exploded at a government building in Oklahoma City killing at least 80 people including 17 children at a nursery.
At least 100 people have been injured and the number of dead is expected to rise.
In an emotional speech, President Bill Clinton vowed "swift, certain and severe" punishment for those behind the atrocity.
"The United States will not tolerate and I will not allow the people of this country to be intimidated by evil cowards," he told a White House news conference this evening.
Trapped in the rubble
The blast happened just after 0900 local time when most workers were in their offices. It destroyed the facade of the ten-storey Alfred Murrah Building.
One survivor said he thought there was an earthquake: "I never heard anything that loud. It was a horrible noise...the roar of the whole building crumbling,"
There were scenes of chaos as paramedics treated the wounded on the pavement and rescue workers battled to dig out those still trapped in the rubble.
The building housed a children's nursery on the second floor as well as social security, customs, agriculture and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
Some federal agents noted that the ATF mounted the operation two years ago today which ended the siege of David Koresh's Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas. However members of the cult commemorating the siege have angrily denied any connection.
The State Department would not discuss the possibility of this being a terrorist attack but the FBI and Oklahoma police put out an alert for three men believed to be of Middle Eastern origin driving a brown Chevrolet pick-up truck.
Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and ten of his supporters are currently on trial for the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.
Government buildings in Washington and all over the US have been put on high alert. Federal offices in Wilmington, Boston and Rochester were evacuated after bomb scares.
Who knew it would give TV producers and movie execs an excuse to make every fictional attack the work of neo-nazi domestic terrorists?
I was here in Switzerland. I remember most; all the talk and discussion about the other bombs found. Interviews with people talking about the bombs. Etc.
Then from one moment to the next it was a war crazed John Rambo type, his side kick Pancho, and of course the third suspect.
try 1966.....now that predates penicillin doesn't it? well maybe not.
I was sitting in my apartment on 144th and Penn in Oklahoma City. I was trying to finish a long lab report which was due for Industrial Microbiology class.
I distinctly remember the blast as it rattled my apartment. I origininally thought it was a sonic boom from Tinker AFB. However, something told me to turn on my scanner. I just sat there in shock as I heard what was happening. I even heard the BOLO go out for the middle eastern males.
Wow. Time passes, but the memories still remain.
lets throw in that middle eastern connection while where at it. I do believe in that coverup.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
I'd not gone into work that morning, as I had something like an 8:30 or 9 am (west coast) appointment for my annual physical...therefore, I had the TV on and was able to catch much of the "breaking news" business.
I was at work talking on the phone with my wife, when she told me it felt like something just crashed into our house. After flipping on a radio and hearing of an explosion downtown, I decided to call my mom to see if she knew what was happening. When she didn't answer, I turned on the TV and saw that it was her building and knew immediately in my spirit that she was gone.
It's hard to believe she has been gone for 11 years now. The hardest part has always been my kids growing up without their "Grammy" and the change it caused in my dad. Unfortunately, he looked to "stuff" (riches, houses, travel, etc...) to fill the hole left in his heart, instead of God and his family.
My brother had just died the month before and I was in my car, coming home from my sister-in-law's after having visited her and the kids in Rochester, N.Y. for a few days. I was listening to the radio when I first heard the reports.
Diito that exactly.
We had just moved into an apartment in Oklahoma City, and were unpacking our stuff, with no radio or television hooked up. We found out there had been a bombing when our relatives started calling to found out whether we'd been blown up. We were about 6 miles from the bomb site.
I was at work in a small company in the Philly suburbs. There was a TV upstairs. Both I and one of the owners had lived in OKC. When we heard the news, we both sat numbly watching the TV for two hours, saying very little.
I've NEVER... seen a convicted murderer executed so quickly either.
PRayers for you and your family.
God bless you!
Yes. It CAN be done. ;)
I was busy getting pulled over by a special weapons team at Oak Ridge National Lab. When you're driving your mail truck towards the Robotics Research Facility, and suddenly find armored vehicles in front of you and behind you, along with heavily armed and nervous men - you realize something bad has happened.
Pearl Harbor, HI on excercises (RIMPAC, I think)
I was working on a roof in the city of Buffalo..
Bill Clinton......."we will not tolerate"............yeah right bottom feeder.
