:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Afghanistan Calls for Crackdown at Border
(Full Story)

Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

Rahim Karimi said in the news conference that Afghanistan need greater "cooperation" from both its eastern neighbor and the international community in its battle against Islamic militants.

Coalition and Afghan forces have in recent days been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Special Dispatch Series - No. 1165
May 16, 2006 No.1165

"U.S. Linguist Noam Chomsky Meets With Hizbullah Leaders in Lebanon"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "According to Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV network, Professor Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) visited Hizbullah headquarters this week, meeting with the organization's secretary-general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in a Beirut suburb as well as with other Hizbullah leaders. The U.S. State Department lists Hizbullah as a "terrorist organization." [1] It should be noted that Sheikh Nasrallah frequently calls for the destruction of the U.S. [2]

On May 13, 2006, Professor Chomsky was quoted by Al-Manar as saying, "Hizbullah's insistence on keeping its arms is justified... I think Nasrallah has a reasoned argument and [a] persuasive argument that they [the arms] should be in the hands of Hizbullah as a deterrent to potential aggression, and there is plenty of background reasons for that. So until, I think his position [is] reporting it correctly and it seems to me [a] reasonable position, is that until there is a general political settlement in the region, [and] the threat of aggression and violence is reduced or eliminated, there has to be a deterrent, and the Lebanese army can't be a deterrent."

Al-Manar goes on to state, "When asked about the U.S. list of terrorist states, he [Chomsky] said [that] if the U.S. was to stick to the clear and precise definition of terrorism in its code of laws, it would be the leading terrorist state." [3]

During his visit to Lebanon, Chomsky also spoke at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Center for American Studies and Research at the American University of Beirut. [4]

The following are excerpts from a report on Lebanese New TV about a meeting in Lebanon between American linguist Prof. Noam Chomsky and Hizbullah leaders. [5]

Iran to require oil payments in euros [While you were away,...]
United Press International ^ | 15MAY06 | United Press International

Posted on 05/16/2006 3:09:54 AM PDT by familyop

TEHRAN, May 15 (UPI) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced Friday that in July Iran will abandon dollar payments for its oil and natural gas exports in favor of euros.

The move comes amid a standoff between Tehran and Washington over Iran's nuclear fuel enrichment program. The Bush administration insists the program is cover for a nuclear weapons program, a charge that Iran denies.

All current international oil transactions on the New York Mercantile Exchange and London's International Petroleum Exchange are priced in dollars.

Middleeastforex.com reported May 13 that Ahmadinejad announced the change Friday during a visit to Baku, Azerbaijan.

Many political observers see the decision as an attempt to pressure Washington, which is attempting to line up other U.N. Security Council members to act against Iran for its nuclear policies.

Iran has also proposed establishing a euro-based Iranian oil bourse to compete with NYMEX and the IPE. The proposal was first put forward in the beginning of the Third Development Plan (2000-2005), and began to receive serious attention in 2005.

Some observers speculate that the Iranian switch to euros could negatively affect the dollar, as many central banks from oil importing nations could choose to stock up their currency reserves with euros rather than dollars.

Student’s death in Germany sparks protests in Pakistan

By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan

RAWALPINDI, PAKISTAN (ANS) -- The death of a Pakistani student in a cell in Germany early on Wednesday, May 10, sparked protests in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Friday, May 12.
The student, Aamir Cheema, who was pursuing higher education in Germany, had been arrested by German police on March 20 for allegedly trying to hurt the editor of a German newspaper that published the cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.

Cheema, who was pursuing higher education in Germany, was arrested by the German police on March 20 while attending a rally organized to protest the printing of caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

A report on the Pakistani Geo TV said the student's father Nazir Cheema, received a phone call on May 11 from the Pakistan Foreign Office about his son's death on Thursday.

Other reports in Germany said that justice officials had said that a 28-year-old man identified only as Aamir C. was found dead in a cell early Wednesday and that he appeared to have hanged himself with his clothing.

The Friday protest call in Pakistan was given by a six-party religious alliance called Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA). The MMA leaders reportedly demanded of the Pakistani government to help bring the German police officials to justice who they allege of torturing Cheema to death.

According to an Urdu Daily Jang, the protest demonstration started from Jamiah Masjid Khulfa-a-Rashideen (mosque) G-9/2. The protesters, it said, were carrying placards and banners with slogans against Pakistani government’s disinterest in making efforts to bring the dead body of Aamir Cheema from Germany to Pakistan inscribed on them.

MMA parliamentarian Mian Muhammad Aslam and Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam leader Maulana Nazir Farouqi and others addressed the enraged protesters.

A protest demonstration was also staged in front of Madrassah Dar-ul-aloom Taleemul Quran (Muslim religious school) in Rawalpindi.

The daily Jang reported that the speakers called for snapping of diplomatic ties with Germany. The speakers were further quoted as saying by the Urdu daily that the Pakistani rulers were working for the interests of the US.

“An attack on Iran would be considered as an attack on Pakistan”, the newspaper quoted the speakers as saying.

Another religious organization, Shabab-e-Milli staged protest demonstration in Rawalpindi against the decision of bringing the dead body of Aamir Cheema to Lahore instead of Rawalpindi.

Leaders of the religious parties in Pakistan allege that Aamir Cheema was tortured to death by German police officials. German ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Gunter Mulack dispelled the impression that torture was inflicted on the Pakistani student. According to Daily Jang report the German ambassador while addressing a press conference on Friday, May 12 said that a high level investigation into the death of Aamir Cheema revealed that there was no mark of torture on his body.

The Jang quoted the ambassador as saying that Cheema was kept in a lock up and not in jail and he was waiting for his trial to begin.

Thousands of people attended the funeral of Aamir Cheema on Saturday, May 13 which was performed in the deceased native village, Sarroki Cheema in district Gujranwala.

The mourners were reportedly holding placards and banners with anti-government and anti-Germany slogans inscribed on them.

The religious parties say they may now hijack the issue to promote their agenda as people of Pakistan are going to polls in 2007.

Utah Campground Closed Because of Plague (Bubonic Plague - Utah - 5/16/06)

The Associated Press Tuesday, May 16, 2006; 4:50 AM

SALT LAKE CITY -- A campground at Natural Bridges National Monument has been closed because of bubonic plague detected among field mice and chipmunks.

Plague also has been found this spring in rodent populations at Mesa Verde National Park and Colorado National Monument.

National Park Service officials said there never has been a reported human case of bubonic plague originating from the parks or national monuments.

"We come down on the conservative side when it comes to closing campgrounds," said Joe Winkelmaier of the U.S. Public Health Service. "We just like to be sure when it comes to plague."

Several weeks ago, park rangers noticed a large number of dead field mice at Natural Bridges, about 40 miles west of Blanding. Chief Ranger Ralph Jones showed that tests indicated they died from the plague....

So we have either found the missing bubonic plague mice from New Jersey (hightly doubtful)...or we now have bubonic plague in mice on both the east and west coasts.

"Israel warns of long-range Iran missiles [5,000 kilometers, for Europe.]"
IranMania ^ | 16MAY06 | IranMania

Posted on 05/16/2006 3:33:38 AM PDT by familyop

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "LONDON, May 16 (IranMania) - Iran is working to obtain long-range missiles which could threaten the whole of Europe, the former head of Israel's military intelligence said, AFP reported.

"Iran already has surface-to-surface missiles capable of being equipped with nuclear warheads with a 1,500 (930 miles) kilometer range but it will in the future have missiles with a range of 5,000 kilometers, which will threaten the whole of Europe," Aharon Zeevi told a conference in Tel Aviv.

Iranian President Mahmoud "Ahmadinejad is promising the end of history in two or three years' time and I suggest that we believe him," Zeevi added in remarks that were carried by Israeli radio.

Zeevi did not say when he expected Iran to have acquired the longer range missiles."

Thanks for posting this. I signed up for myspace back when it first started and figured something like this would happen there at some point. I do recall a similar news story with google's (I think) networking site.

GLOBAL JIHAD
MySpace.com hosts wannabe terrorists
Popular site provides fertile ground for recruitment, glorification of jihad

While concerns about MySpace.com often focus on its use by sexual predators, the popular youth networking website may also pose a risk to the nation's security.

An investigation found the website to be fertile ground for inspiring and recruiting a new generation of Islamic terrorists, according to independent analyst Laura Mansfield.

A young man from Seattle, for example, who gives his name as Amin Al-Mujaahid As-Salafi – or "Salafi Jihaadi – has a blog that features images of al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, British jihadist Abu Hamza, and the 19 hijackers who carried out the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, referring to them as the "Magnificent 19."

An audio link on his site – titled "Du'a by Abdul Rahman – "sounds absolutely Hitleresque," Mansfield says.

She finds a "disturbing pattern" emerging in a closer examination of the 78 "friends" listed in As-Salafi's "social network."

MySpace blogger Rashid Ali

His friend Rashid Ali, who describes himself as a 31-year-old living in Seattle, has similar views.

Ali describes his activities:

Reading Quran & hadith, Training Hui (Chinese-Muslim) kung-fu, Makoto-Ryu aki-jujitsu, & muay-thai-kick-boxing, NiNjitsu, Penjat-Silat, escrima:Kali/JKD.Target shooting ect. And hanging out with. My Big Bro Imam Rahim

Like his "friend," Ali includes jihadi-tribute imagery and the black flag of jihad on his page.

"With over 173 people listed, Ali appears to be part of a wide network of people who share similar sentiments," Mansfield says.

A MySpace blog called "Soldiers of Allah" features the hard-edged tones of rap to call Muslims to faithfulness in titles such as "No Compromise" and "Bring Islam Back."

Soldiers of Allah says it's "not a jihad group" but declares, "Remember we are the next generation of Muslims and it's an obligation and responsibility of each and every Muslim to implement as Allah commanded."

Soldiers of Allah has 258 people in its "social network."

Among them is 19-year-old Salafi Mujahid of Chicago who boasts an image on his page that says "Support Our Troops" above Arabic writing and an assault rifle.

The site also has images glorifying Zarqawi. Mujahid says he's an architecture major at College Of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill., who is active in the Muslim Students Association.

Some of these youth, such as 17-year old "Yaqub," seem to simply echo Islamist propaganda, Mansfield says.

Yaqub, from Plainfield, N.J., proclaims "Denmark Is messin with the wrong people!!"

Some, such as 17-year old Aaron Moore of West Haven, Conn., seem to have developed profound anti-American feelings:

white ppl (or americans) killed most of the native Americans they caused the trail of tears (deals with the native americans, mostly of the Cherokee nation) then they continue pushing them back on the western front …

americans say "all muslims are saveges, or animal beasts" (as they did to the native americans, [see a cycle?]) or the americans also say "ohh, arabs and muslims are almost humans".

Others, such as 19-year old "Islamakazi," are more explicit, posting a countdown until what he describes as "Iran war (world war 3)."

Along with the "countdown clock" are a variety of other images glorifying jihadi and terrorist leaders, including Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jihadi imagery, video and audio easily are found on MySpace.com sites of young girls as well as of older male youth, Mansfield points out.

A young California woman, this one claiming to be 18 and posting under the screen name "Islam4Ever," is listed in "3rabiah's" circle of friends.

Recruiting

MySpace.com is fertile ground for terrorist recruitment, Mansfield says.

Nineteen-year-old Hemadah from Brooklyn is like many of the other teenagers on the site, describing himself as 190 pounds, 5'8" tall and a Gemeni of Middle Eastern descent. He doesn't drink, has no children and is a college student. He has cute photos of beautiful children, in this case his niece and nephew. He has a special love for everything bagels and wants to go "to college to become a cop, hopefully work my way up as a detective."

But a look at his MySpace blog suggests he's anything but ordinary.

How does he want to die?:

"AS A MARTYR, IF NOT THAT WAY, THEN WHILE IM PRAYING AND MY HEADS ON THE FLOOR"

Twenty-one year old Isa from Fort Worth, Texas, also says he wants to die as a martyr.

Twenty-three year old Kareemwazwaz, who posts a photo of Palestinian terrorist Izz el din Qassam on his webpage, includes this posting:

How do you want to Die: a martyr for palestine What do you want to be when you Grow Up: a martyr for Palestine

Mahmoud, a student from the University Of California at Santa Cruz, expresses similar sentiments. How does Mahmoud want to die?

"defending something ... either my family, my religion, or my country ... basically i wanna die a martyr"

He includes a photo from the UC Santa Cruz "Palestinian Die-In," dated May 9.

'Palestinian Die In' at University of California, Santa Cruz

A 17-year-old girl from California echos the two young men, saying she wants to die "as a Martyr (Shahid) insha'a Allah."

Eighteen year old Fayyad of Oviedo, Fla., has even bolder aspirations.

The University of Central Florida student wants to die "as a martyr for God or in a huge nuclear explosion."

Mansfield says such beliefs are not rare among MySpace.com users, identifying blogs belonging to more than 70 young people who want to die as a martyr.

"Is one of these 70young people, who openly aspire to be a martyr in the name of Allah, one of the next wave of terrorists who will attack America?" Mansfield asks.

Mansfield said the FBI, when contacted regarding the websites, said all of the material is "protected free speech."

Wait...isn't that one of the kids from the Cosby Show? Malcom Jamal Warner? No wait...it looks a lot like one of my own students from a few years ago. Now that's a real possibility....if he went to school in South Florida....

Believe it or not, the inner city schools are ripe Jihadi recruiting grounds for those not already close to Christ. So much anger. So much hate. So much violence.

Good Morning...
Sorry to hear that Potlatch. Myspace has had a lot of problems and of course adverse publicity because of it. With today's technology, It's hard to raise young children without computers. I believe I read, that there's talk of "Homeland Security" and/or the USDOJ closing that site down. No doubt, the ACLU would scream First Amendment rights. It's a definitive parental problem to watch though. Likewise, we have two young grandchildren to worry about too.

I doubt they will close it down. One college banned it from their college network because so many college students were on it that it was 40% of their usage!

They are old enough to hopefully use some common sense but the younger kids aren't aware of all the information they are inadvertently giving out.
