CWA Outraged by Major Networks’ Lawsuits Against FCC
Concerned Women for America ^ | 04/18/06 | Stacey Holliday

Washington, D.C. — Concerned Women for America (CWA) expressed its strong dismay at the multibillion-dollar broadcast industry’s latest attempt to abuse the public airwaves. After repeatedly offending the public with indecent broadcasts, four major broadcasters filed what CWA believes are frivolous lawsuits challenging the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) recent rulings.

A license to broadcast doesn’t give anyone – not even super-rich Big-Media conglomerates – the right to broadcast indecent language between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The four major broadcasters want the courts to approve the indiscriminate use of words for excretory and explicit sexual conduct.

“All four broadcast networks last week announced their decision to continue their assault on the FCC's authority to regulate the airwaves against profanity and sexual content,” said Lanier Swann, CWA’s Director of Government Relations. “The action illustrates how out of touch television moguls are with American families.

“75 percent of Americans believe the FCC should, in fact, have more ability to regulate our television content. The networks choose to ignore and abuse the millions of Americans who want the ability to turn on their televisions without fear that they and their children will be confronted with what the industry claims is merely ‘fleeting, isolated -- and in some cases unintentional’ vulgarity and overt sexual conduct. This is a bold-faced attempt by the networks to have free reign to say they whatever they please.

“We fully support Chairman Kevin Martin's bold stand against the type of trash today's networks define as quality entertainment. We encourage the FCC to continue to hold networks accountable for the programming that violates federal decency regulations, and to enforce tougher indecency fines."

“75 percent of Americans believe the [government] should,

I agree with their ends, but not their means.

Networks should not be broadcasting cussing etc because encourages cussing. It coarsens the public level of discourse. It sets a new low. It teaches kids that there are no boundaries, no limits, no expectations of behavior.

It doesn't matter what 75% of people want either way. When then next generation takes over and 75% want more cussing and sex on TV, then it will still be a bad idea.

This country wasn't supposed to be run by mob-rule (aka majority rule). But it's now a RINO (Republic In Name Only.)

That is why they created the channel knob or even on the remote. I can't stand people not using their own fingers to change the channel and show these companies they don't like their programming.

Knock 'em out of existence, eh? Cool. Without them, people could transmit big wattage on the TV/radio/phone/telecomm frequencies we use, stepping on the channels without repercussion. Blast what they want into the middle of the game/movie/program/song you're taking in. Kids with transmitters blasting porn and cussing into everything. Jamming safety and air traffic channels. Sounds like fun! Can't wait.

I fully understand the free-will and free-market issues -- and yes, boycotts begin at home.

Yet even so, the public airwaves are not unlimited commodities. Also relevant is the fact that these very airwaves are being used in subversion of the Constitution, despite a false premise of the media still being the Fourth Estate. Corrupted though the FCC licensing is, it still is an important check on multinational media conglomerates and on filth spewed under the umbrella of 'free speech.'

This controversy isn't over whether these things can be broadcast, but whether they can be broadcast in the hours of 6am-10pm. And the are many words in the English language. Why so many sh!ts and #ucks on tv?

Unconstitutional "hate speech" laws would be used to limit the topics discussed on Sean or Rush.

I can't wait till I see one of our area phone guys out working and letting him know that CWA now stands for "Concerned Women of America". They were apparently misinformed, thinking that it meant Communications Workers of America all of this time. Too bad they are no longer on strike, that would have went over very well at the picket line.

A license to broadcast doesn’t give anyone ... the right to broadcast indecent language between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Can the FCC revoke the licenses of certain broadcast radio stations that advocated truancy, other violations of law, and protests for foreigners (against our sovereignty) a few weeks ago? Those stations certainly didn't provide any public good, and other people could probably make better use of the station bandwidth.

I agree completely. All we need is a liberal President's handpicked FCC using the present FCC's decision rationale to muzzle Rush, Sean, or FoxNews commentators. Check out TV Watch at http://www.televisionwatch.org for some common-sense reason in this debate.

Good for them. Why does CWA hate capitalism?
