I'm wondering how many have been in a public school lately, to see the awful mess they have become. Or to see, first hand, what kind of children we have coming up who will be running things one day. I teach at a public high school in a large south-central metro area. I started here this year. Before this, I had been teaching in the military system, which I now realize is very different from the regular public schools. The difference being that where parents actually have something to lose, they WILL control their children. I want you to know something of what it is like. Our "children" are beasts. They are rude, disrespectful, full of themselves, pretentious, out of control, sex obsessed and stupid. They know they don't have to behave because there isn't a thing on God's earth we can do to them. The teachers cannot control the classrooms and we can't MAKE them learn anything. These little savages breeze through the system learning as little as possible. It isn't a stretch to realize that if a few of them can write their name, play ball or recite the words to the latest rap song, that is enough to graduate them. I WISH everyone could see an example of their reading, comprehension and writing "skills". I can promise you, you would be outraged. What's even worse, they DON'T care. They don't want to hear about the future. They don't want to hear about excellence. They are stupid and proud. We spend a fortune on Special Education- would you like to know how most of that money is being spent? The resources of special education are being spent on kids who are too disruptive for a regular classroom. These kids aren't "differently-abled" for the most part. I had one little darling tell me that he was there because he didn't want to do the work. That's all. I would love to bring you all in for an afternoon with an "honors class". I MUST wonder what, exactly, are the standards for "honors". There are a precious few kids in these classes who actually ARE brighter than the rest and, for them, I feel a great deal of sympathy. The atmosphere in these classes, as well, is not the least bit conducive to learning. One cannot teach when one cannot control the classrom. One cannot control the classroom when one if faced with parents who view discipline for their children as a lawsuit better than winning the lottery. One cannot teach or control the classroom when one is faced with parents as stupid and worthless as their kids. I will be leaving the public school system at the end of this year. The very people who have allowed this state of affairs to continue will remain in place until the people of this country learn to stand up to the left wing education establishment who have helped to create this abysmal "black hole" and until parents are forced to take responsibility for their horrible kids. Until then, I urge the parents of young kids to get them OUT of it- private school, home school. There are other,FAR better, choices. I'm heading for some OTHER type of job. I wanted to teach; I wanted to make a difference. Now, I am just bitter and angry. And more conservative than ever.
I can't tell you how many kids I see whose parents make a $400 monthly car payment on a high priced Lexus or SUV and then send their kids to public school.
I would rather drive an older car and pay monthly tuition to a private school.
You left out the part about how half the public school teachers are socialist maniacs just collecting a check.

He is very concerned about the future of our nation. We pass the mantle to the younger generations. And yet, we are not giving those kids the education that they need. If they do not have the tools to keep America a superpower and on the cutting edge of development and technology, everything can be lost.
We are already watching our math, science, reading... scores plummet. As they do, our future does not look as bright. Those that think it will not matter, because they and their generation will have passed on (the boomers), are forgetting that their children and grandchildren will be picking up the pieces.
It is imperative that we stop the apathy. It is easy to say, "Well, my kids go to a good school." But, what about all of the other kids who do not have that choice? They will still be part of the fabric of America. Shouldn't they, too, be the best they can be... if for nothing else than the betterment of our nation?
I'm not advocating socialism. I see this as a personal responsibility I believe if everyone was involved in their community and monitored their school system, a great deal of change can happen, especially if we stand together and voice our objections loudly. After all, we already fund the schools. We should be able to influence how they are run.

I was public schooled from high school through graduate school. I can count on my hands the number of bad teachers and professors I had. Only one or two in high school, only 3 or 4 in college, and only one or two in grad school. That's a pretty good run, I'd have to say.
Similarly, having been in public schools continually from high school through grad school, I have had some awesome classmates who would impress anyone on this board. Sure, the world has its share of jerks and they are not under-represented in the school or university setting. Still, all in all, I can think of only one or two classmates that I couldn't work with.
So, I must pay for the thugs education and then pay more for private schooling for my children. I feel sorry for those other children in public schools who are the wrong color.
My 82-year-old Mom has been teaching in the public schools for around 40 years (she still subs.) She is still proudly telling people how, 10 years ago, she camped out overnight in front of one of the local private Christian schools in order to secure one of the few remaining spots for her granddaughter. She just couldn't stand the thought of this sweet innocent being subjected to public schools like the ones she had been teaching in.

lol I remember when teachers weren't bitter or angry. My daughter-in-law is a teacher in Middle School and loves every minute of it. She has the WORST kids and works like a dog. She loves those kids and has made a huge difference in their lives. They write her letters how much they respect her and how she gave them a chance when no other teacher would give them the time of day. As a result, their test scores are up and they are proud of themselves. Thank God there are some teachers that still love what they do.
Ineed. In the military system, the parents can be thrown off base, and overseas, the family can be sent stateside sans soldier. It makes for a peaceful school day!
You are right- they AREN'T stupid when it comes to making schmucks out of the school system. And they can do it without reading at a high school level...
Agree. Jerks are everywhere. Even in private schools.
I had temporary custody of my sister's two teenagers. I had to meet with the principle to talk about legalities, change of address etc. While waiting in the office there was a constant stream of disruptive students being "towed" into the waiting area to meet with counselors, assistants, and office personal. These children were rude and some very disruptive and combative. I remember thinking to myself if this is the next generation, we are in trouble.
Even though my Charges have returned to their family, I still involve myself with their education and moral upbringing. Believe it or not, these two teenagers respect me because I have set limits and rules along with love and respect and I am convinced this is what makes us so close.
There is no shame in our society anymore. If a child misbehaves in school or in public the parents are right there claiming some sort of disability.Schools are just a place to send their unruly brats. No one is held responsible.

I'll guess that you've had a really bad first year with a not-so-supportive administration. My suggestion, if you really want to teach, is to try again somewhere else - maybe a private school or a more conservative, less urban location.
And you're correct - the degree and type of parental involvement can make or break a school.
One of the reasons I supported GW the first time was his stand on vouchers. I was more disgusted than you can know when he rolled over for the dems on this.

It's rare to find a public high school graduate without college or military experience with anything resembling acceptable job skills. This wasn't at all true ten to fifteen years ago.
