Former federal terrorism investigators say a piece of luggage hastily checked in at the Portland, Maine, airport by a World Trade Center hijacker on the morning of Sept. 11 provided the Rosetta stone enabling FBI agents to swiftly unravel the mystery of who carried out the suicide attacks and what motivated them.
A mix-up in Boston prevented the luggage from connecting with the plane that hijackers crashed into the north tower of the trade center. Seized by FBI agents at Boston's Logan Airport, investigators said, it contained Arab-language papers revealing the identities of all 19 hijackers involved in the four hijackings, as well as information on their plans, backgrounds and motives.
The luggage saga represents what the former federal authorities describe as an untold story of 9/11 -- offering explanations for questions long unanswered about the investigation of the tragedy, such as how authorities were able to identify the hijackers so soon after the attacks.
The former federal investigators said information found in the bag was passed on to Justice Department lawyers, who prosecuted Zacarias Moussaoui on charges growing out of the suicide attacks. A Justice Department spokesman, Brian Roehrkasse, said: "Under the judge's order, we're not going to comment on anything relating to the case

And here I was thinking that our intelligence agencies were brightning up. Guess I was mistaken.
No, just normal airport operations ~ happens a lot doncha' know.
Since 9/11 was engendered by incompetence on the part of government bureaucrats, it's only fitting that it was solved by incompetence on the part of an airline.
Misdirected luggage?
I'm surprised some scumbag baggage handler didn't make off with the contents of the suitcase before the information became known.
When I flew United and had my luggage robbed in transit (and had the bad manners to complain about it), an official of the TSA half-jokingly suggested I check eBay.
Baggage handlers? Right after the lawyers, says I. Right after the lawyers.
That's what AlQaida says you know.
I think that roundabout thru Portland is bizarre, I feel certain they did something important there, For I cannot believe they'd risk the mission otherwise.
Excellent read; thanks for posting this.
Here's a pic of one that used to work for Qantas in Sydney, Australia. Gives one such a great feeling of confidence...doesn't it? This one has recently been arrested...for terrorism related activities.
I'll stay home or drive from now on, thanks.
The best laid plans........
What a bunch of rubes checking a bag w/ all their plans...
What a further bunch of rubes is in the FBI that a group of Al Quaedas could plan for so long and carry out such a rudimentary and evil plan that had been written IN A TOM CLANCY BOOK six years earlier and our FBI is too gaddam STUPID to even imagine it!!!!!!!!
Remarkable. I'd imagined that everything like that was consumed in the crashes. Let's hear it for the inefficiency of airport baggage handling. I'd guessed that they were able to identify the 19 rather quickly by studying airline passenger lists, focusing on obvious Arab/Muslims (retroactive profiling!), of which there couldn't be very many, and eliminating all whose families could be contacted, etc. I think they would have zeroed in on the "terror 19" fairly quickly even without the help of those documents. Also, I recall reading that on at least one of the flights there was a flight attendant who phoned in (to her airline control center) the seat #s of at least some of the terrorists. I don't imagine there would have been a problem figuring out which 19 were the perps even without the docs, but we may have gotten some other helpful info in that luggage.
Ping.
Something's not right here. All the liberals that say they love America say we were wrong to jump to the conclusion that it was al-caca. And if this truely turns out to be legit, then I bet Mr. Bush did not have a warrant, and was abusing the law. /sarcasm
Most likely to hand off that flask of anthrax that Atta picked up in Prague in April.

Wait---rewind that...
Luggage? Someone planning to commit suicide needed LUGGAGE?
Bin admited it in the video that was captured in Afganistan. Joked about it even. Only the pilots knew it was a suicide mission. Most of the 19 thought it was just a hijack.
I think they used Portland because security was more lax there than at Boston's Logan airport.
Of course the real question is: Why bother taking your papers with you, if you and they are just going to be incinerated anyway? Unless of course there is more interesting information in those papers that they wanted to keep from US authorities. Correspondence with Osama, or Saddam? The names of others in their terrorist cells, the folks who provided safe houses, money, etc, to them while they were preparing for the kamikaze hijackings.
